Given my recent obsession with all things retro gaming and I know some others in here are also into that stuff, I figured I'd create a new thread where we can talk about this stuff. Here is my latest endeavor into the world of retro gaming. This time it is with the Sega Saturn. I picked one up a few months back and this past weekend, I installed a mod kit on it that effectively removes the optical disc drive and replaces it with an SD card reader. I then downloaded about 100 saturn game disc images and formatted them so that the sd card reader mod could read the games and presto! I have a sega saturn that has 110 games right at my fingertip and can play any one I like. It's pretty awesome and there are some fantastic games on the Saturn that I never knew even existed. I have a similar mod done on my Dreamcast. So, for those of you keeping track, I have: -SNES with an everdrive -Sega Genesis with an everdrive -N64 with an everdrive -Dreamcast with SD card reader in place of optical disc drive -Sega Saturn with SD card reader in place of optical disc drive Next on my list is to fix up an NES I recently got and get an everdrive for it. All of my retro consoles are connected with RGB Scart cables to a 14" PVM (high quality CRT that accepts an RGB signal). Many retro gamers I meet are more collectors than players. I'm not into the collecting. Takes up too much space and gets expensive quick. I'm more interested in playing the games on their actual hardware, but I don't need an authentic copy of the game to do that. I have learned so much in a short amount of time and I can't seem to get enough of this stuff. So, anyone else into the retro scene or am I just in the deep end all by myself?

I think it's pretty cool since I had an NES, SNES, N64, etc., but never had Sega systems and don't have much inclination to play those games. However, I won't be getting into the retro scene mainly because I play any games I'm interested in on emulators on my PC or virtual console versions. I must admit stuff like the Analogue Mini NT are appealing to me for the 'coolness' factor, but the practical part of me won't let me go down that rabbit hole. I'll be following this thread to keep track of all the latest stuff you guys get into though!

Man, this is so interesting to me. I didn't know about the everdrive until I saw you post about it in a previous thread. That is the perfect solution to those that do have the system. I'm eventually going to go the route you did, that Saturn mod sounds pretty sweet. I have a couple of Saturns so I'd be interested in trying that with one. Would be so cool to play Panzer Dragoon Saga, since it is practically impossible to get the disc without paying an arm and leg, and I heard they lost the source code so there is little chance in it coming up for sale in digital format. Once I am ready to take the plunge I am going to ask you a lot of questions. Hope you don't mind.

Once I am ready to take the plunge I am going to ask you a lot of questions. Hope you don't mind. Be careful fatty. This rabbit hole goes deep. I've spent a small fortune over the past few months and there are still tons of things I want to buy, and I'm not even talking about the games. The goal for me is to have all the old systems and have everdrives for everything that I can. It doesn't seem like much at first, but as I dive deeper into things, I find more and more stuff I would love to get.

Damn you cesar! These things look outstanding. Price is a bit steep but given how much you can play on it, it's still pretty awesome. My only concern is pinball has such a mecahnical feel to it. I love video pinball a ton, but there's just something about the feel of an oldschool pinball machine that is just tough to replicate. As much as I want an authentic pinball game, everyone I talk to says they are a pain to maintain and something is always breaking on them. That's why this video pinball seems like a great alternative.

HAHA. Yeah, it's a little steep. But I've played w/ them and it's pretty damn close to a real pinball machine, w/ the added feature of upgrading the tables. Yes, I've also wanted one, my wife actually loves pinball too. She'd actually give the nod BUT it is an absolute nightmare to maintain.
I've tried (barely) to find used ones w/ no luck.

I assume you're referring to a real pinball in terms of the maintenance? I'm glad the video pinball machines are that close. Do they have like force feedback at all so it feels like bumpers are going off or when the ball is bouncing around? That's like 90% of the feel of pinball. This is definitely a very tempting alternative and one that I would absolutely consider if I ever get a mancave. Not anytime soon unfortunately.

Yes, real pinball maintenance is a pain. The video pinball I've tried does have feedback so it's like rumble. Nothing will ever feel like real pinball BUT, it's a good compromise. I can't recall if I tried to tilt it but I think it's possible to have that feature w/ the right setup. I looked at MDF kits and just the wood for a full size machine can be $1500. But then you supply 2 displays, controllers and a PC. With that, you could do a full size version. It gets 'close' to the price of real machine BUT you can change the game. OR, you splurge for a month and rent one and when you're done, you give it back. www.videoamusement.com/category/pinball-games-rental/

That seems like a good compromise all around without extra costs. Unless I win the lottery, that ain't happening anytime soon, but it's good to have dreams Thanks for this info though. This is cool stuff and I didn't even know it existed.

I'm posting this in the retro gaming section even though it's a new release. Anyone else getting Sonic Mania? The game is getting awesome reviews. I haven't been this excited for a Sonic game in years. Glad to see Sega finally getting it right by letting the fan community take charge

I've never been a huge Sonic fan outside of playing the original on a rental Sega system when I was a kid. Also, I have no system that can play the game. I'll be interested to hear everyone's feedback on it though.

I got the game (collectors edition) yesterday. I was always a Sega kid growing up, so hearing that there was a good Sonic game in 15 years and I am all over it. I've only played a few of the levels so far, but instantly I can tell that the developers nailed it. The graphics are spot on and what's cool is they even include a scan line filter so you can get that CRT look. It works really well and I like the look of it best. the music is fantastic as well and some of it consists of remixes of old sonic music. The game plays fantastic on Switch in dock mode. Haven't tried it in handheld mode though. The game isn't uber easy either and has some challenging bits to it. They also have a lot of hidden things to encourage multiple play throughs. I have zero regrets getting this game and am looking forward to playing through it multiple times. Sonic is back baby and age hasn't slowed him down at all

Ok, does anyone here know of a reputable site for me to purchase an R4 card for my DS? I've heard there are cards now that can play on both DS and 3DS. I've just never gotten one before and am interested in buying from a reputable seller.
I believe some here have one of these. Where did you get yours at?

I bought from Real Hot Stuff. I did switch from R4 to dstwo because the support was better.
I don't know the current status but I always had luck on the GBAtemp forums for current info.

I've had a DSTwo for a few years now, works on DS and 3DS fine. Also vote for gbatemp for latest / best info.

Thanks everyone. What's the difference between R4 And DSTwo? I went onto gba temp last night and started poking around. I'll keep looking but from what I briefly saw the recommended flash carts thread was several years old. I was only on the site for a few though so I will see if I can find something more recent. For me I'd rather buy something authentic than a clone item and want to buy from a reputable store, preferably in the US. I appreciate the quick responses and will do some more digging on this to see what I can find.

A few years back, the dstwo had better 3DS support and was updated more quickly.
When N issues a 3DS FW update, the cart vendors had to chase and update their cart FW to match. Same cat and mouse game w/ iOS jailbreak. dstwo was much better and in some cases, didn't have to be updated as often.
