This site is a wealth of knowledge and has helped me get the best picture out of all my retro gaming systems. The guy who runs it is a good guy and always replies to all my emails whenever I had a question. I actually got to meet him in person while at a retro gaming expo in NYC. www.retrorgb.comI guess he just launched an indiegogo campaign as he wants to make his site a not-for-proft wiki and make it a repository for all sorts of info. I'm definitely chipping in and figured I would post about it here in case anyone else is interested. Even if you don't chip in, definitely check out his site as there is just a ton of info there that I personally found very interesting.

Given my recent obsession with all things retro gaming and I know some others in here are also into that stuff, I figured I'd create a new thread where we can talk about this stuff. Here is my latest endeavor into the world of retro gaming. This time it is with the Sega Saturn. I picked one up a few months back and this past weekend, I installed a mod kit on it that effectively removes the optical disc drive and replaces it with an SD card reader. I then downloaded about 100 saturn game disc images and formatted them so that the sd card reader mod could read the games and presto! I have a sega saturn that has 110 games right at my fingertip and can play any one I like. It's pretty awesome and there are some fantastic games on the Saturn that I never knew even existed. I have a similar mod done on my Dreamcast. So, for those of you keeping track, I have: -SNES with an everdrive -Sega Genesis with an everdrive -N64 with an everdrive -Dreamcast with SD card reader in place of optical disc drive -Sega Saturn with SD card reader in place of optical disc drive Next on my list is to fix up an NES I recently got and get an everdrive for it. All of my retro consoles are connected with RGB Scart cables to a 14" PVM (high quality CRT that accepts an RGB signal). Many retro gamers I meet are more collectors than players. I'm not into the collecting. Takes up too much space and gets expensive quick. I'm more interested in playing the games on their actual hardware, but I don't need an authentic copy of the game to do that. I have learned so much in a short amount of time and I can't seem to get enough of this stuff. So, anyone else into the retro scene or am I just in the deep end all by myself? Man, this is so interesting to me. I didn't know about the everdrive until I saw you post about it in a previous thread. That is the perfect solution to those that do have the system. I'm eventually going to go the route you did, that Saturn mod sounds pretty sweet. I have a couple of Saturns so I'd be interested in trying that with one. Would be so cool to play Panzer Dragoon Saga, since it is practically impossible to get the disc without paying an arm and leg, and I heard they lost the source code so there is little chance in it coming up for sale in digital format. Once I am ready to take the plunge I am going to ask you a lot of questions. Hope you don't mind. Here's a great video that talks all about Everdrives fatty.

Oh, and jincman hooked me up with a NES Everdrive (N8) for my 40th bday. So, here's my current set up: -NES with Everdrive -SNES with Everdrive (SD2SNES) -N64 with Everdrive -Sega Genesis with Everdrive (also plays Sega Master System games) -32X (Genesis Everdrive plays 32X games on a 32X system) -Sega CD with any game burned onto a blank disc that I want to play -Dreamcast with SD card reader in place of optical disc drive -Sega Saturn with SD card reader in place of optical disc drive My next project will be cleaning up a Turbografx 16 I have and getting an everdrive for it as well.

Heh heh, I went through a semi-retro phase back about 10-12 years ago. In my case it was the Atari 5200. I LOVED some games on that system and collected a bunch on eBay. Ultimately sold them since it was time I didn't have. Nice collection though! I rely on emulators or Virtual Console at this point for my retro gaming fix.

Haha! I know! But that's what makes this so fun. I love getting to play these old games on original hardware. On a CRT no less. It's such a nostalgic experience. I still enjoy my modern stuff but throwing in a retro game here and there has just been a blast. I don't do the collector thing because that would just get too expensive and space constrained. I basically just do original consoles and everdrives when possible. Plus I must confess that I really like taking these old and abused systems, cleaning/fixing them up and giving them new purpose. I like reading up on how to hack these devices too. Eventually I plan to mod the PS1, PS2, and original XBOX. I have them all but haven't gotten around to modding them yet as I need to acquire various tools. My current project is I found a really old and beat up GBA SP with the uber nice backlit screen Nintendo released late in its life. I'm going to take that apart and use the screen in one of the original GBAs that doesn't have the lit screen at all. Then you get the more comfortable GBA with the uber nice screen. I'll try and post pics if I'm successful with it. Looks straight forward enough.

My son came home and wanted this because his friend had one. www.amazon.com/GAMING%C2%AE-8-Bit-Retro-Portable-Handheld-Console/dp/B00DMXO70QI'm all for retro but suggested he get one that's MAME based so we could swap games as those cheap ones tend to have games that are actually repeats w/ different names. We looked around and found Pi GRRL Zero and now he wants to build one. We've got a new project. I do have a Micro+ 3D printer (Kickstarter) but honestly prints like it costs ($300). We'll probably buy a pre-printed case for $20. Yeah, it's more $$ but at least we built it and it can be upgraded. Will post up when/if we're done. www.adafruit.com/product/3161

SNES Classic is periodically popping up on Amazon for list. Snagged one. Keep an eye out if you're interested.
UPDATE: Arrived yesterday. Good lord, can they make the cables a LITTLE LONGER??!? I can't get myself to spend the money for MORE wireless controllers so I'm going the ghetto route and buying a 10' HDMI cable. I'm powering it w/ an Anker battery and USB cable. At least this way the console is right nearby for those Resets...
Pretty cool little console, I like all the video options. Played a little Contra 3, man I forgot how hard that game is, especially solo, even with 7 lives.

Hey, thanks for the tip. I have a bunch of old controllers - I could easily give up a single NES and SNES to convert to wireless. Would be nice for some of Switch games.

I'm sorry if this causes offense, but I'm not familiar with this game. What's all the excitement about?

I've gone full retro. I funded Greenboy Games' Where is my Body last year and couldn't stand playing on my OG Gameboy. Yup, I still have my original one in working condition. But I forgot how dim the screen is.
I reshelled a GBA SP 101 for my son a while back and used that but the backlight is so weak. So when I backed Greenboy's newest game, I decided to go full IPS conversion and went down the rabbit hole. I've picked up a Gameboy Color with v3 IPS and it's great. So then I figured, I'm going deeper and playing games w/ no online focus. I'm playing Zelda Oracle of Ages and loving it, granted I still need help since I don't have patience. I've picked up Dragon Warrior 3 and Pokemon Pinball. I was going to try Pokemon but still doesn't hit w/ me. I am looking for a US version of Oracle of Season but damn, they're pricey.
I also decided to upgrade my GBA SP and got a v3 IPS for that too. It was tricky because I tweaked the original hinges and wasn't sure it as going to work well but it did. Screen looks awesome and I picked up up Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3. It's a pain to look on eBay because there are so many bootlegs out there and I only want original, US versions.
I was considering going down the Everdrive route and consolidating but I'm trying to avoid the temptation of ROMs. I'm trying to be legit. FMU, there's ways to rip your carts but I sold my DS a long time ago and don't want to hassle w/ trying to find my GBA link cable.

Once upon a time I ripped my GBA and DS games although it's been probably 8-10 years so I don't know if I remember how. I believe DS is easy if you have a 3DS (since 3DS is easily soft-modded for homebrew) but I seem to recall doing GBA over a network connection to my PC from a DS lite. Again, though, my memory is hazy. I'm sure gbatemp would have more current info.

But it's a don't care now after seeing how much an Everdrive costs...

I have a GBA Everdrive and love it. Use it on my GB player and backlit modded GBA. With the upcoming Analog Pocket, you will just be able to jail break it and play all the GBA rooms you want on that.

Yup. I missed the pre-order and it's delayed like many other products. But in theory, that would also work. I've been tempted to go with www.boxypixel.com/ and try a metal case. Very similar to Analogue.
