I'll take piggyback reaper's thread. My #funemployment officially ends on April 15. I've accepted a position as Assoc Director of Partner Relations for a non-profit called Year Up (https://yearup.org/). It's an organization that helps 18-24 urban youth transition to meaningful jobs and higher education. I'll be managing the customer accounts where the youth intern in Silicon Valley. I've been wanting to 'do my part' to leave a better legacy and this is an organization and mission that I connected with starting end of last year. it's definitely a big change going to non-profit, this ain't semiconductor salary anymore. But the industry was good to me and we did a good job of saving well. And it'll be nice not to have to pay for COBRA anymore. AND one of the company benefits is that they pay for fitness costs, which specifically includes CrossFit. How cool is that?!?!

Congratulations!! That’ll be a completely different mindset and most likely a very welcome change. It’s refreshing to be able to set your mind to a new problem and exhilarating to watch yourself succeed in a new environment. Pile on top of that the fact that you’re helping others, it sounds like an amazing opportunity! Thanks for letting us know. I hope you enjoyed your funcation. I’d like some updates as you get into it. It’d be interesting to hear how the job is going. It’s an honor to talk to v2.0! What an upgrade!

That is awesome oldskool, congrats. I'd like to transition to something similar in the next 5 years or so. Right now my thinking is to bring foster kids in to help me renovate/flip houses teaching them different skill sets such as woodworking, electrical, communicating effectively with other trades contractors, etc. These flip houses might be offered at a reduced rate to other foster kids who are aging out of the system that will need guidance and help transitioning into adulthood and being on their own. I don't know how far this will go but this is my current vision.
Very cool to see what you are getting into. I'm trying to build my savings to be in the same boat as you where I can take another job, not make as much, but it would be more fulfilling and I would still have enough supplemental income to live.
Please keep us updated on how this goes. Day 1 starts on Tax Day!

There aren't a lot of those around anymore, and MANY kids, even in Silicon Valley aren't meant for college. With all these people around here, we still need others that can fix/build stuff. AI can't do that shit. 2) Raising up those who need it. We need more people to give a hand up. My wife's friend's brother started a company in SF to address the needs of the housing shortage and came up with this. starcity.com/They've got TONS of funding. Your idea could work similarly and be more expandable since it doesn't hit a special need like we have here. Also, places like Chan Zuckerberg are ALWAYS looking for cool ideas to fund for the betterment of society. Keep noodling your idea, it might have real legs. chanzuckerberg.com/During my 2.0 search, I meant with some entrepreneurs, listened to many VC pitches, some good, some bad. I also got to connect w/ various folks in non-profit. Feel free to ping me if you have interest.

Congrats Cesar. So happy to hear about your new job and love of helping others. Money is one of those things that grows less important the older you get. I've had similar discoveries where making more doesn't equate to being happier, so quality of life is important, which includes a fulfilling career.
You were great at your last job and no doubt will be great at this one as well. Plus what a great example you are setting for your kids. Congrats again and hope this job offers you everything you're looking for and more.

Thanks, I appreciate it, these websites help and I will probably reach out to you to find out more once I figure out how to get traction with this thing. I look at my kids and I don't think all of them want to go the college route, I try to get them to think about what they want to do but right now they are just not sure. So this and working with foster kids and being the GC for building my home made me see the skills that you get with these trade jobs. Your connections that you have had over the years are awesome, with your wife's friend with starcity to nom nom paleo, you really are the types of people that you hang out with and this network that you have is pretty cool. Thanks again, now to keep noodling this (haha, great word). Hope the first week of the new job has went well!

I will point out that almost 90% of my connections came from CrossFit. Cuz EVERYTHING comes back to it... Also because our community, while small, is very tight. It really is my 'church'.

Been quite a conversation piece lately. As it turns out, the sale came too soon for the Qualcomm people to get much out of it. I ended up MUCH better off going to MS.

The semicon consolidation is going crazy. Marvell bought Aquantia and a few others. I know Marvell folks who came in from an acquisition when I was there. They benefitted from the stock increases. Then left a few years ago to Aquantia and now they are bought AGAIN. Crazy.

That is crazy. When I had my job offer in hand from Marvell, their stock price was $17. Now its $24! Lots of excitement for sure. There is a guy at barefoot who quit intel 2 months ago. Now he’s and intel employee again. Ha.
