Thanks, I will pull the trigger.
Tonight I took it easy a little, no heavy weights just a warm up and did another WOD from the list:
10 rounds for time: 10 push-ups, 10 squats, 10 sit ups
Time: 8:08

HA! I actually like this one, I can rock the shit out of 95# OHS. The trick for me will be to pace the CTB so I don't waste my arms. When CTBs are gone, they're gone.
If you are going to struggle w/ the CTB, my best tip would be to resort to follow this advice from another master:
Do a reverse grip, like a chin-up, narrower than you might do for a pull-up. Kip as big as you can, although it will feel awkward, then pull yourself to the bar with everything you got. It will be a lot of biceps and it won't be pretty, but you might surprise yourself and get some reps when you thought you'd get none.
If you stick w/ are regular pullup grip, then go wider, you have less distance to pull up.
Good luck.
One breakdown, though I haven't watched yet.

Yeah, right now I can't do a CTB pull-up. Are chin-ups allowed? I thought it had to be an overhand grip pull-up. Even with the way my door and pull-up bar are, I don't know. I will practice tonight and watch the tips as well.

www.tabatatimes.com/coaching-roundtable-crossfit-open-14-2-tips-advice/If you want to just get them, even at least 1, you can do reverse (chin up grip), that's allowed. It's more bicep but most people get their first one this way. That way you can score above a 10 at the least. CTB and OHS are the bane of many people so you're not alone. And chin ups 'style' is allowed but your chest (just below collarbone) has to touch the bar. A chin up alone wont' cut it. I did a test this AM to see what I'd have to pace. I normally can do 95# unbroken so my goal is to figure how to break the CTB so I don't go to failure. Going to failure pretty much means they're gone forever. I did the 2 rounds of OHS unbroken. For the 1st CTB I went 5-5. Then I went 3-3-2-1-1. I finished the first round in 2:40. I was a bit surprised at bing that slow. I'd like to blame my rig that's fresstanding, so I weigh it down w/ plates. That swaying makes it a bit hard to fight the kip rhythm. At least that's my excuse. Hoping tomorrow that the more solid rig will help. Plus, I need to do more than 10min of warmup. For OHS, the longer it goes, the better I am. I think I went a little too cold. My goal is to make it past the 6:00 so I can end on 9:00. Surprisingly, I'm seeing a lot of reports of big studs not finishing 2 rounds or just barely eaking out past 100 reps. This is deceiving WOD, your arms get toast before you think. The key is how to manage your CTB. Seems better to pace it to save your arms rather than speed through just to rest for 45s. Good luck.

Lord please don't do this. It's gaining 'meme' status the FB Crossfit Masters page. games.crossfit.com/judge/14.234274He has the ability to do butterfly which I can really appreciate. BUT, the top of his head barely reaches the plane of the bar. Shit, in order to hit the chest, his head would have to go through the ceiling. Looking at his squats, his thighs don't even break 45 degrees. This is pretty bad for someone who's supposedly passed the online judging course and is judging others.

Sweet Lord that was hard.
83, 5 reps short of going 9:00. I tried to break up the CTBs so I could use up the rest during that period. I still had about 40s so I prob still went too fast. Then as I went to the first CTBs on round 2 it fell apart pretty quick. I figured if I had another 45s I could've made 5 more but as it was, I did all I could. I watched our coach and a regional bound 'kid' (he's made it a few times) and I noticed that they setup boxes/plates and used lower bars as they got tired. That allowed them to just grab the bar vs someone like me (5'6") jumping up to the bar everytime. I think that reducing that jump on the singles towards the end could've helped me. But trust me, it's one and done. I'm sure my arms will be toast tomorrow.
In our box, only our coach, a regional athlete and 2 Masters (yeah!) made it into the 3rd round and beyond. Many of our other beasts barely made it through much of round 2.
This is deceivingly hard.

The wife also got her first 8 CTBs. She's been sweating all week because she's never been able to do them. She has a pullup but does most workouts w/ a band. I knew she could get one, at least one, w/ a reverse grip and big kip. But she surprised the whole gym w/ 8. That was the best part of the day.

Here's the last 2 minutes of mine. I wish I had heard my wife and did reverse grip. I could've went a little faster at the end. Oh well, I'm sure this'll come up again next year.

That was great to watch. My wife was right beside me watching it as well. Good job, oldskool. I was able to do a chin-up ctb but the way my setup is with the door there is no way it would qualify. So I chose to sit this one out instead of posting an embarrassing score of 10 reps. That and it didn't help that this was a very hectic weekend. I will take it a WOD at a time and see what the next one brings.
Oh and I watched it a couple of days ago but didn't post, but I'm surprised that Jeff Richards would of thought that the workout would have been acceptable, seems like he should have known better...even I knew that would fly. 23 rejected the workout but still one accepted it? Hmmm...

Know that there's no shame in a 10. A score is a score.

I get what you're saying, but it's still very disappointing. That said, I gotta keep working to get better and I'm doing that.
Last night I did Supreme90 Cardio Challenge to get some more cardio work going.

Take it as a gauge that allows you to look at next year. My wife was freaking out because she never had CTBs last year. She can do pullups but gets all mental. She's been making a concerted effort to improve nutrition in the past few months, not to lose weight to but to become stronger. More protein & fat. She was worried about getting heavier but our coach said the goal is to get more calories so she could work harder and get stronger, thereby reducing her injuries (she gets injured easily and a lot). Lo and behold, she's PRing like crazy and lost some weight. We aren't Paleo, probably more Zone-like as we eat a bit more carbs than before. Ever since Norcal Masters, I haven't paid much attention to my carb intake and I've gained a few. But my PRs are still coming strong. She was worried (A LOT) about the CTB. She wanted at least 1. I knew she could do that. But she surprised the entire gym w/ 8. She wrote an inspiration, quick post on FB and Crossfit media picked it up on Sat. They asked to quote her and they posted it on the main Crossfit Games page. She got 6.3K likes and growing. Almost 140 comments, saying they were in the same boat. A few even dedicated their 14.2 effort to her. That was WAY TOO cool. Her quote was: "I got my first CTB pull-ups today. My score of 18 feels awfully sweet, and I'm going again Monday morning, because I believe 20 is completely within my reach. This is why I enter the Open - to challenge my beliefs of what I think I can do. Fired up." She ended up not doing it again, thanks to the advice of our coaches. She also created some posts, the first of which made the rounds on FB and MANY other folks who passed it around the world. So so cool. sweatpantsoclock.tumblr.com/post/79023308817/im-the-kind-of-person-whosweatpantsoclock.tumblr.com/post/79139741845/pr-in-perspective-or-why-im-not-redoing-wod-14-2Another good one was on the mainsite. games.crossfit.com/article/i-only-got-306-fewer-reps-talaynaPost your score. It may be low but you're competing against 2013 and 2014 fatty. You ain't competing against anyone else. 2015 fatty may be surprised what preceded. I didn't do as well as I'd like. BUT, then again, how much did I practice CTB? Almost none, despite the fact that CTBs have been part of every Open WOD. Shame on me. You can bet that CTBs are going to be part of my normal programming from now on.

14.3. Step ups allowed, use it. Saves your legs. Put the box at 45 degrees to you. Point the corner at your crotch. Makes it easier to step up, I think.

I wanted to wait to post until I read the tumbler posts (it was blocked at work). Thanks, I needed that. I will take this as a learning experience and start playing all of my scores. Tell your wife 'thanks' too. Bring on 14.3!

I was hoping to use my weight bench for step-ups but it is only 21". I might be able to get a box in time, if not I will ghetto-fy it and put my non-functioning subwoofer on top of some square particle board pieces and go with that.
Watching the BarbellShrug video now. It's on like Donkey Kong.

I'm looking at leaderboard scores and watching tweets and FB posts. Even the BIG boys I know are having trouble at 275#. This is definitely a gasser. Pick a plan that gets you moving constantly w/ as little breaks as possible. Sounds like it's a good idea to do step ups and single DLs as long as you don't rest too long. W/ the singles don't move away from the bar. I know this guy and helps at the Open at our gym, he's friends w/ our owner too. I respect his advice. www.courageperformance.com/1/post/2014/03/open-workout-143-strategy.htmlRemember this, like any other, is just a workout. Don't toast your back for a few reps. Be smart. I'm wearing my belt for sure.

14.3 = 111. My goal was triple digits and I was able to go beyond that, so big win.
I tested it on Sat AM and the 225 felt so heavy. But it the WOD, I was warmed up and pumped from the crowd, which helps me. I broke up the 185 & 225 into reps of 5. I did step ups on the corner of the box, which was manageable to keep a constant pace. My tiebreaker time was 4:31. The 275# DLs were HEAVY and I was planning on singles. However, my setup took time, as I wanted to lock my core before moving the bar. As a result, I did doubles and pulled it 21 times. I was happy since I didn't kill my back.
