So I go to the Chiefs game on Sunday and also to the Royals game yesterday.
Finally, something encouraging.
It's good to see your thoughts on the way Super Mario Bros. U is looking in HD. Talking to the guy that went to the Denver Nintendo Families Conference, he wasn't real big on how it looked, but he never did get into Nintendo games in the first place. The impression I got from him was that the games were made for the tablet, and then basically scaled up to play it on the TV, ugh. He also shared your same opinion on the way Batman looks. It's very nice to see that you thought the game looked very good.
I didn't think I would care, but now I really want to play a high rez Mario/Metroid/Zelda game. And from watching the videos of Mario through a computer, it was so hard to tell how much the graphics were improved.
I never really got into Wii Sports but it seems as if Nintendoland has some potential. A game that I would have fun playing with the kids as opposed to having to sit through Wii Party. That game is awful.
On a good note though, the kids hooked my Super Nintendo upstairs and have been playing some of the classics. Before my son would try Mario and give up because it was too hard (and head back to Wii Party) but he has now been playing Super Mario Allstars quite a bit. Finally, his gaming tastes are coming of age.
Anyways, thanks for the great impressions. I was keeping my eyes out on P-100 Wonderful 101 (didn't know about the name change until I read the post) and I'm definitely more excited.
I'm curious to know how well this launch will go. If I am ever able to pass this test I might have to give in and get a Wii U as an early Christmas present to myself.

OK, I couldn't avoid it. Got the email from Gamestop today about getting on the waitlist if you are a PowerUp member (even free version). I am already, so they added me to their list. It was a handwritten notebook and I'm on the middle of the 2nd page, probably 15th to 20th, or similar. Hopefully before Xmas.

Oldskool. Great impressions write up. Thank you. Sorry I've been quiet this week as I've been in Vegas all week for work.
I'm really surprised that places like amazon or newegg are not doing pre orders for Wii U. I know Nintendo has had its run ins with Amazon in the past, but how in the world could they not be using one of the world's biggest retailers to help support their upcoming console?

Wii U’s GamePad is not the children’s toy it appears to be, according to Ubisoft’s Michel Ancel, who has shared some interesting technical insight into the device.
Speaking with Nintendo Power, by way of Nintendo Life, Ancel said of the Wii U GamePad, “I think this is where Nintendo is really out in front of things. The technology inside the controller is quite a bit more advanced than what people might think”
“It’s really responsive. The response time is crazy, in fact, and I think the competitors will need some time to [get their solutions] this responsive. It’s crazy because the game is running in full HD [on the television], we are streaming another picture on the GamePad screen, and it’s still 60 frames per second.”
“And the latency on the controller is just 1/60 of a second, so it’s one frame late. It’s crazy, it’s so fast. It’s almost instant. That’s why it responds so well. So it can be used as a real game-design thing.”

Most core gamers want thier response times down in the double digit milliseconds. 16 milliseconds sounds pretty good.

just read through the thread as i've been ignoring the WiiU thus far. ZombieU sounds intersting if those Dark Souls impressions are really true/accurate. so does that Wonderful 101. but overall......still not sold, i can wait for a price drop easily.

As detailed over on Nintendo’s official site, the Wii U’s internet will be based on the NetFront Browser engine, the same one that powers the 3DS, Vita, and PlayStation 3. Players will be able to use the browser mid-game, and can also browse the web from their GamePad controllers while watching something else on the TV.
The browser will not be compatible with any plug-ins, which means no Adobe Flash. Saving or uploading images through the web browser will also not be supported. And because the GamePad only supports single-touch inputs, multi-touch features like pinch-to-zoom will not be featured either.
The Wii U’s browser is apparently quite capable of handling HTML5, however, as test results posted over at HTML5test.com (via NintendoLife) give it a rating of 323 + 8 out of a max 515 points, with a higher number meaning better results. That far surpasses current console browsers, and even scores higher than Internet Explorer 10 on PCs.

Now this is an interesting article. I don't really understand how analog triggers make any difference for a FPS, but they certainly do for a driving game and I am again disappointed in Nintendo for overlooking another obvious feature. All you have to do is do the thing that other companies have been doing for 10+ years now N! Why do you refuse!? www.engadget.com/2012/11/15/editorial-wii-u-first-person-shooters/More WiiU disappointments...

Agreed. Seems like Nintendo isn't making some smart design choices. One other thing that bugs me is that glossy black plastic they used on the controllers (both the gamepad and the pro controller). Its one thing to make the console glossy since you're not touching it very often, but the controller? Bad choice as it will just look so dirty so quickly. I have no doubts I will get a Wii U eventually, but am hoping N releases a matte black version next year.
No analog triggers is definitely another complaint I have too. Not so much for FPS games but racing games it will definitely impact.

Just wanted to make a note that today is the release day for the Wii U. Not nearly as much bally-hoo around here as there was for the Wii, huh? Anyone even getting one of these on release day? I'm not, probably will wait for the first price drop, whenever that is.

I'm on the pre-order list at Gamestop. I'm on the 3rd page of a notebook so I'm guessing a few weeks. I got an email confirming my place on the list last week.
I like HD versions of the games and I actually like some of the titles. I went ahead and did the 40% Wii U games at TRU today. It's a limited selection so I got Mario and Epic Mickey. We demo'ed Mickey on the PS3 and liked it. I may change my mind and exchange Mickey for Pikmin or Zombie U if I can.

I'll wait. I have been thinking about the analog trigger thing with shooters and I guess the complaint is likely the feel of pulling a trigger vs pushing a button... Probably not so much about the analog nature of the buttons.

I'm not comparing the Wii U to other platforms. Those comparisons are done. Nintendo has decided (again) to go their own route (with networking, friends, trophies, etc) which seems wrong. But for our family's usage as a 'family' game platform, it works. Mario just kills at our house's age range. It's still fun, and our visit to the Wii U event proved that. If I want a higher end platform, we'll always have more than one console. That's how I look at the Wii U, fortunately or unfortunately. There will never be ONE game platform. Just like there's no one OS, phone OS, smartphone, tablet, TV service, TV streaming platform, etc. No one gets it right and one one ever will.

I agree with that thought and will likely get one eventually. But they just need to convince me and so far, the games coming out are not doing it. So, I'll wait until I can't resist anymore. If they come out with an awesome zelda (I can imagine some super cool puzzles with the WiiU) or a new Metroid (scan for secrets with the tablet?) then I am in. Looking forward to it but holding out.
On a related note, I am flying to California to see a friend of mine this holiday. I'll be staying with him for 2 weeks and he'll have a wiiU. So, I'll get lots of hands-on time. Maybe I'll leave convinced and supply will pick up by then. But I hope not. I'd rather save for the next xbox. Really hoping they incorporate the oculus rift or something similar!

It feels so weird for it to be launch day of a Nintendo console and I'm not posting my impressions of it. However, given my massive backlog(I'll have to post mine at some point on that one thread), I just can't justify the cost of a Wii U. There is no must have game for me on this one too. Frankly, the game I was most interested in was ZombiU, which appears to be fairly mediocre.
New Super Mario U and Nintendoland, which I was least interested in, appear to be the highest rated and actually pretty solid overall. And while I am more interested in playing these games now that the reviews of them seem much better than I expected, neither of them are still convincing me that I need to play them right this minute. They look fun, but look like fun and experiences I've had on past Nintendo games, nothing I haven't experienced before on past Nintendo games/platforms.
And that is what I'm really waiting for on the Wii U. Something I've never experienced before and it requires my immediate attention. The current crop of games just aren't enough. As I said before, me getting a Wii U is not a matter of if, but when. I love Nintendo games and still feel they're among the best in the gaming industry. I'm positive I'll get New Super Mario U and Nintendoland eventually. But neither are system sellers for me.
I wish I knew someone that had a Wii U that I could spend time with, but alas my early impressions will have to come from in store demos or reading reviews from gaming sites. I look forward to seeing everyone else's impressions to those that do get one.

From Gizmodo 'There's been some bellyaching about graphical hiccups in games like Mass Effect. I noticed some framerate drop in ME3 and Madden, and much more in FIFA 13, but chalked it up to port issues and them being launch titles. For what it's worth, ZombiU is strong graphically, and had no graphical slowdown.'
