Cars aren't my thing, as long as it is reliable, good on gas and I can listen to CDs I'm good to go. But if the FJ is your thing, have fun my man. My only recommendation is to that it doesn't hurt your budget/family expenses getting it. I have to admit, that would be a fun ride to go off-roading with. Oldskool's Barracuda is pretty sweet too. I laugh at all the neighbors in their BMWs, Teslas, Maseratis etc having to deal w/ the elements. This line cracked me up. Our neighbors are very different. In my small rural town, many neighbors love their trucks. Even if they really don't use them that often like a truck that size should be used. My next door neighbor has a big newer Dodge Ram with chrome rims that he always keeps nice and shiny. We all have our hobbies. I'm curious, since we are all living in different areas, what is your average commute time to work? Mine: 35 miles each way / mostly all highway / about 35-40 minutes each way / rarely heavy traffic (may delay the ride up to five minutes as opposed to no traffic at all) ~6 miles each way / ~ 30 mins doorstep to desktop when on the bus, maybe 40 if i take the ferry / bus can do it in 20 if traffic is light, ferry has a brutal hill if i take it coming home, but maaaaan is it worth it: www.facebook.com/ray.alvarado.1422/videos/vb.1013907340/10203384351942206/?type=2&theaterwww.facebook.com/ray.alvarado.1422/videos/vb.1013907340/10203381738996884/?type=2&theaterwe bought a prius upon arrival, because of the whole car accident thing, and....well, i fit-in with the locals, but it really feels like a waste of money. it isnt used nearly enough.

Took my son and his friend to this yesterday. It was like Vegas and an 80's time machine rolled into one. GLORIOUS www.caextreme.org/Great time machine afternoon with the boys. All versions of Pac Man & Donkey Kong, Super Sprint, Scramble (LOVE), Pong, DDR, Sinistar, Defender, Joust, Xevious, Street Fighter, Marble Madness. Didn't even touch Tapper, BurgerTime. Didn't see Mappy though. I still LOVE Scramble and almost made it through the base level, the big drop before the FUEL lineup kept killing me. There are some REALLY cool VR pinball machines. I played a mini version that really tempted me but I'm not sure I'm willing to pay $2700. But that's way less than real machines and no maintenance. Some cool LED conversions for pinball. My son played a mini arcade MAME cabinet that looked awesome. I was tempted at $1300. We all played The Grid together and it was one of my first positive multiplayer FPS experiences. GREAT game with short sessions. www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8010All in all, I'll be back next year.

Wow, so many cool shows/conventions/etc. like that in California, I'm so jealous. I LOVED playing Super Sprint, NES game was even pretty fun for me. Something about those games where there are mini race cars on the screen that I love. Super Sprint, Super Off Road, RC Pro Am, Galaxy 5000...played the heck out of all those games. As much as I love Micro Machines the toys, surprised I didn't play the games that much. Should give those a try. Scramble, ashamed to admit that I never heard of that game, especially since it seems it was the first in the Gradius series, a series I love. It's even shameful considering I started a topic on here (56K warning haha) about shooters when I first joined and a shooter reference thread on GAF. That show looks so nice, cool time lapse video from a couple of years ago:

I don't even want to think how much I spent on Scramble.

Just got back from an INCREDIBLE vacation in Amsterdam and Africa, where we did 4 different safaris. Definitely a trip of lifetime w/ 11 of our family members.
Here's some vids I took.
Wildebeest Crossing
This was one of three wildebeest crossings we caught along the Mara River in the Serengeti. Not only was it the biggest, including 3 separate, simultaneous entrances into the river, it was the one where we actually spied the crocodile making a successful kill. Granted I kept mistakingly calling them alligators, even in the video... The croc makes a move around 9:25 of the video. Warning, this is long (16 minutes) and not for the faint of heart since it does show the stereotypical 'circle of life'. In our 1st crossing, we saw an old wildebeest stumble into the water but was unable to make it across. He slowly drowned in front of us. Tough to witness but still mesmerizing. TBH, going to the Serengeti, I didn't really understand the spectacle of the Great Migration. Seeing it first hand, now I do. And we all agreed, pictures and video don't do it justice, the sheer magnitude and volume of wildebeests is SO overwhelming.
Lion Kill
On our last night of safaris, we were in the Selous Game Reserve. Our main, personal guide was down ill and we had one more afternoon safari left. Our drivers were anxious to show us some lions, though they didn't realize the amount we'd seen already (and how we'd seen them). TBH, my expectations were low since we had seen so many great things, I didn't think we could top what we had done already. Boy, was I wrong. After a bit of a drive and conversations w/ other safari trucks/drivers, our drivers located the spot where 5 lions were resting. 1 truck was already there, right in front of a sleeping male, probably about 5' from them. They looked annoyed, as if we'd found their secret spot. The other 4 lions sat nearby. We parked and watched for a bit. Eventually, our drivers kept whispering in Swahili to each other and pointed out that there was a few zebra upwind from us, probably 300m or more away. Sure enough, the lions caught the scent. Slowly, they began to turn their heads zebra-ward. 1 lion stood and watched, then started walking farther downwind and around (away from us) while the others kept watch, and the sleeping one kept doing so. The other waking 3 began moving, creating a big semi-circle so they could trap the zebra, which was still grazing. Our driver warned us that once the 5th woke up, he'd immediately join the hunt. And he did. Not only that, he walked through our trucks. At one point, the initial herd disappeared and the 5th lion was staring straight at me as I ducked down in the last row of the truck w/ my camera lens poked out and Diego down w/ me. Yeah, I was a bit freaked. He kept going though. They eventually caught another small herd and we saw the zebras in the horizon running, as one went down quickly. Here's some of it. Feasting begins at 5:00. You can see 1 run away with the head and 2 fighting over a big piece. You can hear the bone crunching. As I said, the circle of life is MESMERIZING. PS, forgive my editing. I will never get that job in Hollywood.

Cool vids. I think the croc attack was closer to 10:25.
Did you read Armada? I listened to the audio book. I liked it but not as much as Ready Player One. It seemed somewhat predictable and kind of weak in several aspects.

I'm only a few hours in with Armada, but I'd probably agree w/ you. Much is quite predictable and there was a bit too much time spent on Zach's origin story TBH. BUT, I'm still going to finish it.
Speaking of Ernest Cline: - Just saw that he's on for a 3rd book, though I don't know the storyline. - He had recommended a TV Show called Mr Robot. It's a show about hackers and I'm HOOKED. Pretty intense, even my 10 YO likes it but I think some things go over his head. There's also quite a bit of the show that's probably a bit older material than he should be watching. Fortunately, that stuff goes over his head as well.

Wow! Spectacular trip oldskool! Who all from your family went? I can't imagine having so many family members all willing to travel so far together. My family and I (wife and daughter) will be leaving for Iceland on Thursday and will be there a week. Should be fun.

Was running out of the office yesterday and only had a moment to post. but I did want to follow-up and say that I agree with Dave. That looks like an amazing vacation. You lead quite a life, oldskool! Was there anything to keep the lions from attacking you? It seemed like you were pretty much just "out there" with very powerful wild creatures. That must have been exhilarating and somewhat terrifying.

I'll post more later, including our even more exhilarating safari walk where we were stalked by bull elephant...
Yup, it was a great vacation. Regarding the lions, nope, there's nothing to keep them from attacking you. You're pretty much out there w/ the animals in open land. Animals that feed on each other so they are definitely wild. The lion walking by our truck was definitely TERRIFYING. If you check my FB albums, you'll even see the 2 male lions underneath the truck w/ our kids. They fell asleep and we were 'stuck' for a bit. That didn't stop all 5 of our kids from sticking their heads out and taking selfies. I can guarantee you that all of us parents were a bit freaked. But they were w/ our guide who didn't bat an eye. None of our guides ever carried, so that doesn't seem to be a need. Only on the walking safari did our warden carry a high caliber rifle. Apparently w/ game like that, an AK won't do shit other than paint a big animal like a Splatoon paint brush. If big game comes at you, you got pretty much 1 shot to get it between the eyes before all hell breaks loose.
Apparently, even though the animals are wild, they don't seem to attack people in vehicles or even tents. They can ignore the vehicles for the most part. It seems that vehicles are too much of a hassle for them to get their 'food'. There's too many animals for them to feed on that they don't need to deal w/ 'canned meat'. Walk out of the car, different story. Far different attitude than what we have here w/ bears that'll look at tents like wrapped candy ready for the taking.
We saw everything, including the Big Five: elephants, lions, black rhino, leopard, Cape buffalo. Add hippos, crocs, cheetahs, warthogs, zebra, wildebeest, giraffes, hyena, jackals, vultures, monkeys, baboons, gazelle, antelope, etc and so many birds to make birders cry.

My family and I (wife and daughter) will be leaving for Iceland on Thursday and will be there a week. Should be fun. Have fun! I'd like to hear your report as Iceland is actually at the top of my list for the next adventure. It was a big group for us, my wife's parents, her sister's family of 5 and my family of 4. We flew from SFO to Amsterdam and stopped for a few days to acclimate before going on safari. We didn't want to be jet lagged at the start. Went to Anne Frank's house which was incredible, especially since my wife's family is Jewish. Saw the Van Gogh museum and had some vlaamse frites and stroop waffles. Didn't get to have as much ale as I would've liked though... Then we hit 4 safari camps in Tanzania and ended w/ a 3 day rest on the beaches of Zanzibar. Truly magical trip, and so glad I could do it w/ my kids.

Anyone see any good movies or watch any good TV shows or anything recently? I've watched a handful of movies that I thought were pretty good and figured I'd talk about them.
1) Force Majeur (Available on Netflix). Swedish movie. Subtitled. Pretty solid movie though. The movie starts out with a family(mom, dad, son, and daughter) on vacation at a skii lodge in France. They are enjoying a nice lunch together at a restaurant when they see an avalanche headed straight for them. Everyone is freaking out and the mom tries to huddle around the kids, while the dad leaves them all behind and bolts for safety. Turns out the avalanche didn't hit them. So, the movie is about the dad trying to work his way back into the family after having abandoned them when faced with danger.
2) The One I Love (Available on Netflix) A couple is having problems with their relationship, so they go off to a resort. Some Twighlight Zoney stuff happens and they run into their exact doubles while at the resort. Except for the doubles are of the best versions of themselves. So, the husband and wife who are growing on each other's nerves now find the best versions of their partners and are trying to decide which version they want.
3) Coherence (Available on Amazon Prime) This one is low budget, but I enjoyed it a lot. About a group of people having a dinner party. Everyone is gathering because a big comet is flying by the Earth. The comet passing by ends up causing some issues that essentially knock out all of the lights in the neighborhood, except for one house. People from the party leave to go explore and end up discovering something strange is happening. Can't say more than that, but I enjoyed it.
4) The Babadook (Available on Netflix) Creepy ass movie about a creepy children's story coming to life and freaking out a kid and his mom. More psychological than horror. Did I mention it was creepy?
5) Time Lapse (Available on Netflix) About a group of friends that stumble on a camera that takes a photograph one day in the future. Of course, like any group that finds such items, they abuse it to financial gain until they start seeing pictures of things about themselves they weren't planning for. Pretty solid little time travel type movie.
In terms of TV shows, the only NEW shows I am watching this year are:
Minority Report - Not that great so far. Feels very formulaic. Not that interesting story arc either.
Scream Queens - Liking this one more than I thought. Very funny vibe to it, similar to that of the Scream movies.

So, I recently took a very cool class I wanted to tell you guys about. Here is the summary: The classroom section was a lot of repeat for me. I've read a few books by Massad and he is so excellent there wasn't a lot left to learn in this class. However, the time on the range was fantastic. All my life I've essentially stood still, aimed at a target and shot carefully. This class pushed me through many drills that teach skills one may need to know in a deadly encounter. They are great drills to remember and then do on my own later. Here is an example: They taught use what a trigger reset is, how to reliably shoot faster, clear a stove pipe, clear a double feed, safe ways to draw, how to aim, tactical reload, tactical reload with clip retention, etc. It was only $75 for the entire day and I went through almost 300 rounds of ammo. I had a blast, learned a lot and can't wait to practice some more. If you guys get a chance to take a class like this, it's worth it. I plan to practice this, take an advanced class next spring and an even more advanced class after that. There are also shooting leagues at the same range that have me interested.
