Well, I managed to get my hands on a NES mini classic today and was excited to hook it up. I know every review talks about how short the controller cables are, but HOLY CRAP they are short. I bought an extra long HDMI cable along with a USB extension cable. The NES mini sits on my floor next to my sofa and I cannot even sit back on my sofa because the controller cables are SO short! Did no one in Nintendo's QA department mention this at all?
Overall it's a cool little system and the games look fantastic. Sadly I'm getting a tiny bit of an audio delay on my receiver, but I may have to do some tweaking to fix that.

Yes! I noticed the exact same thing. It was the first thing I noticed about the NES mini actually. When jumping in Mario the jump sound came about a half second after you jumped.
I thought it was maybe my setup as I don't have an ideal set up. I have my NES connected to an HDMI port on my TV, which then pushes the signal out another HDMI port connected to my receiver, which then plays the audio. I thought maybe having the signal get moved around so much was causing the delay as I've occasionally had lip sync issues with my receiver.

The main reason I had no interest in the NES mini was the hard limit on 30 games. Well, now I may be getting one at some point:

The main reason I had no interest in the NES mini was the hard limit on 30 games. Well, now I may be getting one at some point: That is fantastic! I'm so happy people were able to hack this thing. That being said, I'm not going to bother with the NES classic. I had one for a short time and the first thing I noticed was an audio delay. When you played a mario game and would jump, you didn't hear the jump sound til a half a second later. It just felt "off." Anyway, because I'm getting more into retro games lately, I think instead I will opt for an AVS by retroUSB (http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=36&products_id=78&osCsid=2b8bbdb542931dc29628456439ff0ef4). It's an FPGA version of the NES and outputs in HDMI. Looks like it is spot on in terms of simulating the NES hardware. Plus it works with flash carts, so I'll snag an overdrive to put all the NES ROMS on and then use it with an AVS. It's more expensive, but I think I will like it more in the long run. Then I don't have to deal with the audio delay or those short controller chords

Well, in another move that only seemingly Nintendo can make since most sensible companies care about making money, Nintendo has announced the discontinuation of the NES classic. Yes, you read that right. This is the little system that Nintendo released in November, has been impossible to find, and now instead of waiting for supply to meet demand, Nintendo decided it would just rather end the supply altogether. Why you may ask? Any normal company that had a hot item that was clearly very profitable would continue to offer this thing until people didn't want it. Nintendo would rather choose to upset people and make it next to impossible to ever get. Are they making a version 2 that is more hacker proof? Perhaps, but you would think they would announce version 2 rather than just create a frenzy.
All I know is, while Nintendo has made their fair share of dumb decisions in the past, this one may take the cake as far as I'm concerned. If I were a sharehoulder, I would be quite irate reading this news...

That's insane. Well, if I see one in stock in a store I'll definitely buy to flip now. Prices on eBay will only go up.

Seeing up to $350 today. Yup, they pretty much made those things skyrocket in price now. Very odd decision.

If I were a sharehoulder, I would be quite irate reading this news... Yeah, I am still really ticked off about this. I remember Reggie saying that these would be produced for a bit when they were nowhere to be found during Christmas time, well they are still nowhere to be found and I thought they would have kept it going for a while longer at least. That why I wasn't worried as I felt I would get one eventually. Grrr, Nintendo frustrates me sometimes. They've done some dumb things, like removing the headphone jack from the GBA SP, friend codes, etc. But this really got me. And now there are rumors about a SNES mini. I really want one but I have a feeling it is going to be just like the NES classic mini situation.

Yeah, I agree fatty and had I known the NES classic was going to be a limited run thing, I would've absolutely kept mine. In my case, I had one and got offered $200 for it, so I sold it and figured I'd buy one later when they were more available. Nintendo never said anything about these being a short term thing.
Hell with the SNES mini. I won't even bother at that point. After how Nintendo handled the NES mini, I guarantee that every scalper in town will be all over the SNES mini waiting for Nintendo to announce it's discontinued. No thanks.
If Nintendo announced some alternative solution, I wouldn't be so upset. For instance, they could say they are making a rev 2 version of the NES mini and it's coming out later. Fine. Or they are getting ready to announce the virtual console service. Fine. I get it. But to discontinue a product that you've had stock issues with since day 1 and not give the consumer any other "legal" way to purchase your games is stupid. It will ultimately drive more people to download roms and use emulators and that's money being left on the table for Nintendo.
I've been a huge Nintendo fan for a while now, but more and more I am getting really tired of their BS. I've never seen a company make its most die hard fans work so hard to give them money. If they keep this up, people will just stop trying.

I've bought VC stuff over and over, but without a system that you can play VC games on your options are a bajillion dollar eBay NES classic or ... a free download of an emulator and ROMs. I mean, Nintendo can't be that dumb can they? And yes, that was a rhetorical question. They are definitively that dumb.

Saw dschroll's post about the Everdrive in the backlog thread, but oldskool mentioned the Picade below, which also got me thinking. I've been looking to do a project with my son and I think I might try building a Picade with him. If Nintendo doesn't want my money I can find another way to play these games without having to drag out all of my old cartridges.

Well, the everdrive allows you to play everything on one cartridge, still using original hardware. But yeah, I was thinking about doing a picade project with my daughter too.

As many you already know, Nintendo announced yesterday the SNES Classic mini. The games list looks to be fantastic. Some notable fixes above the NES classic: 1) Controller cable length is 5 feet (was 3 feet on the NES classic). Still too short IMO but a step in the right direction 2) The console comes with 2 controllers so no more hunting down that extra controller. 3) The never commercially released game Star Fox 2 is one of the games 4) Nintendo claims they are going to produce significantly more systems this time around. Is anyone here going to try and get one? Personally I am upset that Nintendo is moving onto the SNES when there is still a ton of demand out there for the NES. I think by not doing another round of NES classics, you are just inviting every scalper under the sun to snatch and hold onto every SNES classic they can get their hands on, until Nintendo inevitably discontinues the product.

Even though I wasn't able to snag a NES classic, I am going to try really hard to get one of these. The game list is great and Star Fox 2. Star Fox 2!
I agree, it is nice that the cord length is longer but still too short. We will see what 'significantly more' actually means but hopefully Nintendo has learned their lesson...eh who am I kidding, of course they haven't.

See, the thing with Nintendo is, they never learn. In the US, they sold like 1.5 million units of the NES classic. IMO, they could've easily sold like 10 million units if not more had they just mass produced the thing rather than make it a limited time deal.
So, when Nintendo says that they learned and they will make more this time, it means they will make like 2 million instead of 1.5 million. In their eyes, it's significantly more, but it will most definitely not satisfy demand for this product.
Again, if Nintendo had some type of legitimate way for people to buy their retro content via virtual console on the switch, I would have less issue because at least there are legal ways out there to obtain these games. But when Nintendo gives you one option and then limits supply, it just causes frustration and anger and forces people to steal your content.
I will of course try and score an SNES classic, but if I don't get one, I still have my SNES with an everdrive and have access to a majority of these games. It would be a huge shame if only 2 million people had access to Starfox 2 when that game deserves a much bigger audience.

I feel betrayed by the NES Classic (never did get one) so I will almost certainly skip this. If I do get one it will be to flip later on, in all honesty, because that's what Nintendo is begging people to do with their insane limited-time production run. If the NES Classic is any indication I should be able to finance most of my Switch purchase later in 2018.
Also, I have at least two emulators on my PC which will play SNES games at least as well as this thing.
