So this Pokemon Go phenomenon. At first I thought it was pretty cool, seems to be pretty popular and it is getting play on main stream sites. But today I'm realizing how popular this thing is. At work they are sending out a company email for a walk at lunch time to catch Pokemon and then I go over to a coworker, who the last thing I would call him would be a gamer, and there on his desk was his phone with Pokemon Go in the background. It's kind of cool seeing Nintendo doing well with this thing, hopefully they can keep the momentum going and apply some neat social things to the NX. But even though my kids went Pokemon hunting today, I still haven't jumped on the bandwagon. Might try it out with them this weekend. And then tonight I learn about the Nintendo Classic Mini. Comes with 30 games and only $60: Balloon Fight™ BUBBLE BOBBLE Castlevania™ Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest™ Donkey Kong™ Donkey Kong Jr. ™ DOUBLE DRAGON II: THE REVENGE Dr. Mario™ Excitebike™ FINAL FANTASY® Galaga™ GHOSTS’N GOBLINS® GRADIUS™ Ice Climber™ Kid Icarus™ Kirby’s Adventure™ Mario Bros. ™ MEGA MAN® 2 Metroid™ NINJA GAIDEN PAC-MAN™ Punch-Out!! ™ Featuring Mr. Dream StarTropics™ SUPER C™ Super Mario Bros.™ Super Mario Bros. ™ 2 Super Mario Bros. ™ 3 TECMO BOWL The Legend of Zelda™ Zelda II: The Adventure of Link™ As I see it I tell my wife and she says "Yeah, I know, I saw it on Facebook...what you're not getting it are you? You already have a NES!" Oh, I'm getting it. Great selection of games too!

Hey fatty, I decided to jump on the bandwagon and download pokemon go. I've only caught 3 pokemon so far. I don't plan to go out of my way to hunting down pokemon, but if I'm somewhere and there's one around me I'll try and catch it. I haven't done anything else in the game though. Honestly, i don't know what else to do. I don't quite understand the premise of this game and what you're supposed to be doing with it. However, I've never played a Pokemon game in my life, so that may be why. Nonetheless, if someone here that is into pokemon can explain to me how to "play" Go and what I should be doing, I might give it more time. In terms of the NES Mini, I am so going to get one of these. I don't have a NES and actually have been wanting to get one, but the fact that I can get this thing instead and it has an HDMI out just saves me that much more trouble. I love the NES game pads and that they can connect to the Wii remote so we can use them on VC games. Really well thought out. Honestly, my only disappointment is I wish the place that the "cartridge" would go into would let you flip it up and put in an SD card. I hoped that Nintendo would let this thing be expandable so you can download additional games to it via SD card. Oh well. This is Nintendo we are talking about, so I guess it was expecting too much. But I am SO getting one of these for Christmas Now all I need to do is make some spoof video of me unwrapping it on Christmas day like the N64 kid

I was initially excited about the NES mini but then found it out it doesn't play cartridges (I have some) and doesn't allow any games beyond the pre-installed 30. Since I already have all the ones I care about out of those 30 in multiple formats this new release isn't for me. Hope those who get it post their thoughts on it though.

It's like a Time Machine right now. Yup, 3 of us at home got hooked. My wife not so much, it's not friendly w/ her Jailbroken iPhone 5. I've tried PokePatch w/ no luck, still crashes a lot. Nearing Level 12. Mostly I'm in it to beat my kids. But I do have to ask my son and daughter what to do and what the evolutions are, as I never played Pokemon at all. I will say that having a jailbroken iPhone has it's advantages. Using Pokmon Go Anywhere, I can just tap on the screen and I'll 'walk' to any location on screen...all from my couch. My kids know that I'm not above cheating so I can beat them.

oldskool...teach me how to play. So far I don't get it other than just walking around looking for pokemon. I'm not even sure how I know where to go to find pokemon other than just walking around to see if they are right next to me.

Haha. TBH, I wouldn't call this thing a game. It's more of a cataloging app to hoard characters. Prob why my wife kinda hates it. Think of it as geocaching without the puzzles, cuz there ain't nothin to solve. You're right, there's nothing to do but walk around. You need pokeballs to catch pokemon, so go to as many pokestops and start hoarding stuff from there. There's a few at my office so I'll just leave my phone on and periodically spin the pokestop to hoard balls, eggs, etc. To catch the Pokemon, throw the ball at it. If you spin the ball, it adds a curve that makes it less likely for them to escape. The escape happens more w/ stronger/rarer Pokemon, usually won't have to worry about that until you get to Level 5 or so. Fighting in a gym? Heck, I haven't really figure that out yet because SO many people are playing now. You seem to have to have Pokemon w/ 800+ combat power (you fight w/ 6 IIRC) or you get pummeled, which happened to me already. I will say that it is getting people outside. We went to the park near Google on Sunday. It was hot but nice out. By the lake, there were about 40 people under a tree. What were they all doing? Playing Pokemon Go because there were 2 Pokestops and a gym there. At the park that day, I'd easily say 90% of the people (adults/kids) were playing. We were in Vegas last Thu, 1 day after release. My kids and I were fighting login issues, running around the airport playing. 2 boys came off a plane staring at their phones. Yup, they were playing too. It's crazy and I'll admit, a little sad sometimes. gizmodo.com/watch-a-stampede-of-pokemon-go-players-descend-on-centr-1783752094?utm_campaign=socialflow_gizmodo_facebook&utm_source=gizmodo_facebook&utm_medium=socialflowTons of links out there to help you. My daughter googled a bunch before me so I just ask her... gonintendo.com/stories/261172-pokemon-go-how-to-level-up-fastwww.theverge.com/2016/7/13/12171508/pokemon-go-how-to-play-tutorial-tips-watch

The one positive I hope Nintendo takes (other than their GIANT stock bump) is that EVERYONE wants the Nintendo IP on mobile platforms. So much money they've left on the table because of their refusal to do so until now. Can you imagine how much $$ they make if/when this goes on to Mario, Zelda, and Metriod IP?

Thanks for the links oldskool. Very helpful. Is there any advantage to getting rid of duplicate pokemon vs. keeping them? I have a ton of the same kind and it looks like you can give them to the professor and you can get candy in return. Seems worthwhile to me, but I don't know.
Also, what's the difference between CP and HP?

HAHA. You sound like me. i ask my son questions and he rolls his eyes. CP, XP and HP are different. support.pokemongo.nianticlabs.com/hc/en-us/articles/222049707-What-are-Combat-Power-CP-and-Hit-Points-HP-The more XP you have, the higher your level. The higher your level, the more variety of Pokemon show up, including ones w/ higher CP. In the beginning, you want to hoard as much as possible, so yes, collect all those Ratatas, Pidgeys, Ekans, etc. Surprisingly, there is a magic formula for how to trade them in. I didn't use the calculator but I did hoard and evolve at the right time. www.polygon.com/2016/7/18/12212514/pokemon-go-level-up-fastThe key is timing. W/ the lucky egg, you have 30 mins to double any chance w/ XP. Ideally, you want to be near a LOT of Pokestops, especially near a lure. The lure will draw tons of Pokemon and that gives you XP. W/ the egg, your XP doubles. If you go to a 'new' area, your likelihood of new Pokemon is higher. New Pokemon give higher XP. Your best bet is to only evolve w/ the egg to maximize XP. I did this in a park and saved all my evolves for this small period. I leveled up FAST and moved from Level 14 to almost Level 16. You get XP for hatching your eggs too, so if you time that even better but that's hard. If you care (I haven't), mind the strength/skill of the Pokemon as you transfer them. When you evolve, it might be better to have a range of abilities to help in battles. I haven't mastered the battles as I get my ass kicked every time. I also realized that before you evolve, if you can can power up a lower level Pokemon as much as possible, it'll evolve into some crazy CP level. I did that and got some > 600 evolutions. Just make sure to leave enough candy to allow you to evolve, which is the priority over power up. But if you hoarded properly, this'll be easy. Mind the Stardust, that gets confusing too. www.ign.com/wikis/pokemon-go/How_to_Get_StardustAnd for Eevee www.vg247.com/2016/07/16/pokemon-go-heres-how-to-choose-one-of-three-evolutions-for-eevee/

Yeah, I'm interested in playing an old school Pokemon game. I have an Original Gameboy so would love to get a cartridge, but if prices are too high I'll just download the game on the 3DS.

UPDATE:
Nintendo of Canada communications manager Julie Gagnon said the NES Classic Edition will not only include a pixel perfect option that displays each pixel as a square, but also a mode simulating the retro look from a CRT television and an option to display the games in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Gagnon also confirmed that all 30 of the games included with the console will feature permanent save points and "instant temporary saves," allowing the player to jump right back into the action without having to use a password or start over from the beginning every time they boot up the system.

Well, in usual Nintendo fashion, Nintendo completely lowballed supply of the NES classic to drive up demand for it. Every store sold out within minutes of this thing going live on sites. Huge lines formed in front of Gamestop, Best Buy, and Target as well. No thanks. I can't believe Nintendo continues to create an artificial demand for a 30 year old platform.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Nintendo makes me work too hard to give them my money. I guess they must not want it that bad, so I won't give it to them until I can easily walk into a store and pick one up.

Sadly this is unsurprising. I was uninterested personally due to the inability to expand and add additional games (and my owning almost all the ones on VC on Wii / Wii U / 3DS). Well, that and the 3 foot cord (?!?! WHAT ?!?!) If they released a system that allowed expansion and had wireless controls (or an adapter that allowed original NES controllers to work) I'd be all over it just for the better graphics. Until then, I'll let everyone else fight it out among themselves.

Cool, thanks for that info. The lack of expansion still sticks in my craw, but this makes it a bit more likely that I get one sometime down the road. Sorry you can't get ahold of one. Stupid Nintendo!

Here's a great write up that I hope NOA reads and gets their shit together with this stuff. Nintendo, you can only push your fans so far. Like I said, I'm tired of having to work so hard to give Nintendo money. Did I miss a link to an article somewhere?
