Anyone get this game? I recently picked it up as I have loved all the previous God of War games, and I am absolutely floored by this one. The graphics are the prettiest PS4 graphics I've ever seen....and I'm playing on a standard PS4 on a 1080p TV. The story is very intriguing to me and makes me want to learn more about norse mythology, much like I wanted to learn more about greek mythology when playing the original god of war games. The voice acting, the music, the story....it's all fantastic. I'm only a few hours into this game, but I already understand why it's getting the 10/10 review scores. I cannot wait to get more time with it....hopefully this weekend.

If you haven't played any of the previous God of War games, don't let that deter you from this one. I loved the originals but you can tell that Sony took this in a new direction and gave it a ton more depth. I think it's easily one of my favorite PS4 games to date. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I’m actively avoiding the earlier games due to some content. This one has none of those issues and was developed without Jaffe. I was never a fan of his. So I’m willing to take a look now.

So I recently finished the new God of War game and I was absolutely blown away from start to finish. The gameplay, the story, the graphics, the content, the music, the voice acting, etc......this is as good as it gets.
For those that are not familiar with the God of War games, I can quickly summarize. The main character, Kratos, was a Greek god that eventually became the God of War. He hated the other greek gods and blamed them for the many wrongs he had in his life (before he realized he was a god). Eventually he wanted to overthrow all of olympus and take out all the gods.
This story takes place much much later in the series where Kratos is older and has a child and is no longer living in Greece. This won't spoil anything as it is all set up at the very beginning. Kratos' wife recently passed and he and his child (Atreus) want to take her ashes to the highest mountain and release them. The big catch is that Kratos and his family have been living in Norway under the radar. As many of you may know from the Marvel movies, Norway has it's own mythology and Norse gods, some of which do not take too kindly to Kratos and his child being there. Thus the adventure starts as Kratos and his son journey to the highest mountain while fighting hordes of mythological creatures and the occasional Norse god. This was a joinery that is absolutely worth taking and you get to explore all sorts of realms and learn quite a bit of Norse mythology along the way.
The combat in this game is absolutely fantastic. Kratos' main weapon is a an axe called leviathan that is not only crazy powerful, but you can throw it and recall it and is an absolute blast to fight with. There are so many skills you can unlock that really showcase a nice variety of moves you can do with your axe, your shield, or even your fists. There are also puzzle elements in the game, but there are not that many and most are not difficult to solve and ultimately the answer is in plain sight.
The graphics in this game have to be the best I have seen on the PS4 to date. I played this on a normal PS4 (no pro for me) on a 1080p TV (no 4k TV for me). But I was blown away at how detailed the graphics were with all the textures and whatnot. Not only that, but the game actually has some amazing colors it really shows off at the various locations you visit. This isn't your post apocalyptic war game where everything is gray or brown. This is a beautiful game that starts out in the snowy mountains and proceeds to take you to forests with beautiful and colorful flowers to volcanic areas with lava and ash.
The music in the game is beautiful and really adds a cinematic feel to everything. I had watched a video where the producers of the game said they went to iceland to hire singers that knew how to sing in ancient norse to give the game even more authenticity...and it worked. Absolutely fantastic.
The voice acting in the game is also quite excellent. I was a little nervous about there being a new voice for Kratos as the old voice actor for him was quite good. But now that I've spent so much time with this game and the new voice of Kratos, I can't go back. The actor did an outstanding job and just nailed the attitude and tone of Kratos.
The story is really where this game shines in that as you're playing the game and taking this journey with the characters, you get to watch them change and grow, sometimes for the worse, sometimes for the better. But still, you are watching this all unfold and feel like you're a part of it....and it's almost sad when it's over because you don't want it to end. But the good news is the game doesn't end when the story ends. The game knows that it's given you a big world to explore with a ton of optional side quests and treasures to find, so there is plenty to enjoy post story.
In fact, I loved this game so much that once the story was done, I kept playing as I wanted to do more side quests and I eventually 100%'d the game getting all the trophies I could. One of those side quests was fighting these various valkyries spread out across the different realms. Let me tell you, these are tough battles....especially the last one. I cannot stress that last one enough BTW. I must have fought her 50 times, trying various moves and weapons, failing, going back to some other quests to level up my gear, and then come back only to have my ass handed to me again. I finally managed to take her out by the skin of my teeth a couple of nights ago and it was one of the most satisfying achievements in my gaming career because that was a hard fought battle like the old days where persistence and practice eventually wins out.
Overall, I cannot recommend this game enough. This is without a doubt my most favorite game on the PS4 and easily one of the best games this generation. Whether you've played the previous God of War games or not, consider this one a must play as you will not be disappointed. 10/10

Sounds great. I am just about finished with The Frozen Wilds. I think this may be my next single player game!

I bought the game last weekend and have been playing off and on since then. Really enjoying it so far. I agree with your comments above. It looks great, the gameplay is fun, etc. Couple thoughts:
1. Sometimes I get into a situation where I've backed my way into a wall and the camera is behind me. I can only see my back. Pretty frustrating.
2. I am playing on the "hard" mode... whatever it was called... not the wurst but just under it... "Challenge me" or something like that. I die a lot but continue to make progress. I may eventually tone it down to the level below that.
3. I've been collecting lots of money and such but haven't done anything with it yet. I expect I need to go buy some move upgrades. I should probably read about the best things to buy somewhere.
Wish I had more time to play...

Haha....I guess you're a glutton for punishment. Good for you though if you see it through. I just did normal mode and while most battles weren't terrible, the valkyries were insane. 3. Yes, in the game you will get the option to buy and upgrade gear, enchantments, etc.
