Agree w/ dschroll. I actually don't play most of the Wii games, it's really for my kid. Most of my stuff nowadays is iPhone or DS.

Time to bump an old topic. Why? The last remaining wish-list item for my modded Wii has now come to fruition: Playing ripped GameCube games via the USB drive, thanks to Dios Mios! (Links: discussion thread / download site.) It's not perfect yet, but it looks like the solution I've been waiting for. I'm away from home right now, but when I get home I'll set it up and post my results here. The only negative is a 32k cluster size is the largest supported on a FAT32 drive ... so, I need to copy everything off my current drive and reformat to the correct cluster size. (I have 64k presently.) Note that there's also Dios Mios Lite which runs GC rips off the SD card too, in case that works better for anyone. I'm just itching to get all my Wii and GameCube games playable off a single drive, finally!

Forgot to mention one more thing: the latest versions of the cIOS stuff from wiihacks.com fixes Metroid Prime Trilogy! I am happy to report having ripped it and successfully played all three trilogy-version games off my hard drive. Also updated Configurable USB Loader (v36) at the same time as it had been a while between updates for that program as well. The latest version of whatever USB loader program you use will be required for GameCube support as well (you need a version newer than 6/23 as that's when Dios Mios [the USB version from the previous post] was released).

Thanks for the update, UsualNoise. Does anyone still know if Nintendo sells the Wii with backwards compatibility still? Sucks that they took that out. I didn't even know about it till I saw dschroll mention it on here.

No, the newest Wiis no longer are backwards compatible. You'll have to buy a used one or an older model thats still new to have that feature.

I'm very tempted to soft mod my Wii as well. If not just to play Earthbound on my Wii.
I'm giving up on official VC games ... Nintendo has done a poor job of getting games on VC out there at a decent price.

Here's my GameCube update: it works! I copied all my GC games to the hard drive (after reformatting as described earlier) and they show up in Config USB Loader along with the Wii games and are launchable ... even prompt for 480p like they should. It's not perfect, though ... the first time I tried running a game after power on it just hung on a black screen. But after a reboot I tried again and it ran with no issues. You know if it's working or hanging by the Wii's blue light coming on and flashing (that means Dios Mios is running).
Some games apparently require having a GC game in the drive (any game) but I haven't run into that yet. So, my summary: this actually works to run GC games off a USB hard drive. It may have some glitches but I haven't yet found any games that don't run.

Hmm. You know, I never tried to load my GC games onto the loader. I may have to do that and bring back Rogue Squadron.

no USB loader support for Gamecube games. The wife and I came up w/ a nice bribe option for our son. We're having him clean out his room a little at a time. For each bag of stuff he empties out of his room, I let him pick one game from my old stash of Gamecube games. Works for him. Granted he wasn't too happy when he randomly chose Tiger Woods 2003. I did pick Double Dash and I realized that I pulled the GC memory card and can't remember where I put it.

I'm using Configurable USB Loader and have all my GameCube games displayed right along with my Wii games. You need a recent version of the loader since the GC support itself is only a month or two old. I'm not sure if any other loaders work yet, but I can vouch for Config USB Loader.

After doing some initial research, it seems it is possible to do a system transfer from a hacked Wii to a Wii U. Even better, it looks like if you restore your internal memory after the transfer you get to keep the games on both systems! I plan on doing this, so if it works (or not) I'll post back here with my results as well as any possible pitfalls.

I was not going to transfer anything so I could keep both systems active. Honestly, both will be hooked to the same home theatre so not a big deal. Wii U will only be used to play Wii U games. 1When you say keep the games, do you mean USB loader games on an HDD or only games you've bought on the eShop for the Wii?

I'm talking about the virtual console stuff - apparently if you do it right, you end up with VC purchases on both systems (although from what I read you can never go into the Wii Shop again on your Wii without losing access to them). Again, I can't personally confirm it yet, but I'll be trying it at some point soon.

I also checked on GBATemp and saw that too. I don't really need to transfer anything but I do wonder about
1) Netflix and Hulu, do those need to transfer in order for me to properly download and use on Wii U? Can't think of any other games/apps that I'd really care about. TBH, I don't care that much about these 2 since they're on 400 other devices...but it's the only ones I could see of any use. 2) Can my Wii and Wii U actively use the same WiiShop account? Don't need concurrent access.

Netflix and Hulu already have built in channels on the Wii U, so I assume you can just log in with your account info and be set.
As far as the other question, no, you can't use the same Wii Shop account on two separate systems (2 Wiis or Wii and Wii U). That's what the system transfer is for. Once you do the transfer from a Wii to a Wii U, all your Wii Shop purchases are moved as is your account authorization. That's why once you do the 'trick' to get them on your hacked Wii and the Wii U you can't go back into the Wii Shop on the hacked Wii - only from the Wii U, which is the only one authorized after the transfer.
Also, keep in the mind that there are now two shops on the Wii U - the eShop which corresponds to the eShop on the 3DS and allows downloading new retail games ... and the Wii Shop, which is available through the Wii menu only and (I assume) works the same as it does on the Wii.

Thanks for the clarification on the 2 'shops'. If I don't care about having the purchased content on my Wii and just transfer to my Wii U, that won't affect my USB loader ability will it? If you don't know, I can always check/post on the other forums too.

Thanks for the clarification UsualNoise.
That is what has always bothered me with Nintendo's account system and why I didn't buy many games from their Wii Shop. I wanted those games to stay with the account name. Starting with the WiiU, hopefully this will be the case and they are starting anew.
I'm assuming with the WiiU, the same account applies for both the Wii shop and eShop.

Sorry fatty. Wii U is just as bad as Wii. Downloadable stuff is applied to the console, not the account.

I'm assuming with the WiiU, the same account applies for both the Wii shop and eShop. I don't know how they are handled on Nintendo's end, but they are completely separate shops. I would guess there's no connection between the two. And yes, Nintendo continues to botch digital content management. After using the PS3 Sony remains my favorite by a lot (even though they went from content being available on up to 5 PS3s to 2 ... it's still way easier to use / manage than Nintendo stuff).

Arrghh! Well, thanks guys.
Come on, Nintendo!
Yeah, I remember the change of systems for the PS3 and how it use to be 5 but is it only 2 now?
Just checked and it is 2 PS3s and 2 portables.
