UsualNoise Did you do the Wii U transfer? I'm wondering if my game saves and USB Loader functionality remain on my Wii after that.
From my research, many recommend doing a BootMii backup before this and then doing a restore after the transfer. However, my mod works just enough to work but the BootMii seems to 'hang' when the Wii starts. Hence, I'm too lazy and I'm trying avoid fixing that unless I have to. All I really want to do w/ the Wii is play my existing game saves with the USB loader games on the HDD.

Not yet, no. But I think you're correct as far as needing to backup the internal system memory (NAND) first, then do the transfer, then copy back in the original NAND.
However, the system transfer only affects official stuff, so I'm 95% sure the USB Loader will continue to work. Game saves will be gone though, you could back them up to an SD card first and copy them back later. Or if you get the NAND backup working, that should take care of it too.

I posted on GBAtemp and one of the users warned me that while your game saves still stay, it could cause you to lose USB Loader functionality. It's highly recommended to to do the NAND backup.
Crap.
I did do the latest HBC update to 1.1 and it send me thru the terminal screens to setup BootMii. I did it as boot2 but when I 'Launch BootMii', my drive just continually flashes blue. At that point late last night, I gave up and just repowered. Ugh, now I have to 'fix' bootmii.
Yes, the game saves can be backed to an SD card for sure, which is what I'll have to do. Now I have to go thru the saves I care about and back 'em up. Oh the hassle of hacking...

UsualNoise Do you 'have' to transfer from Wii to Wii U? If I don't, what's the negative? FMU, one thing is the lack of Mii's but I read here I can work around that. www.nintendolife.com/news/2012/11/guide_transferring_your_mii_to_the_wii_uCan I still 'register' the Wii U with Club Nintendo and use the e-shop to buy stuff? Or is my existing account pretty much married to my old Wii if I don't transfer? Sorry for all the questions, I don't want to do a transfer and find out later, I should've prepared better... Trust me, I'm trying to fix my Bootmii so I can avoid this.

Wow, that was a pain in the ass. My BootMii operation was somehow pretty hosed so I had to fix it. That was made worse by the fact that as of this morning, I didn't even know what BootMii was. I pretty much had a BSOD when trying to execute BootMii from HBC. Fortunately, a friend suggested I look at wiihacks and I found this. www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/29080-hackmii-fix-no-vulnerable-ios-black-screen-scam-freeze.htmlI followed it and it's now backing up my NAND. Next I'll make sure that my HBC and USB loader still work. UPDATE: Went back to my original SD card and I'm back to normal. Hopefully, this NAND backup will work fine if/when I have to restore after the Wii U transfer.

Looks like you answered most of your questions. I would only say that the system transfer isn't really necessary, so don't feel like you have to. I think the main benefit is to get the virtual console / shop purchase stuff transferred. If you don't care about that and just want to copy game saves I *think* that can be done manually via SD card. I was mainly going to try it to give me access to VC purchases on both systems, assuming the NAND backup trick works. I haven't definitely decided to do it yet, though. I'll be interested to hear how it works out for you if you do it though.

New er Super Mario Bros. Wii - completely new game based on the original Wii game: www.newerteam.com/I've played through the most of the first world and a hidden section and I have to say the game is exceptional. Been playing with my brother and daughter and it is at least as much fun as the original. Very creative people must have worked on it. I'll post more when I'm done with it, but if you have any inclination to softmod your Wii this is a great side benefit. Also note that you do NOT have to actually mod your Wii (soft or otherwise) to run this, just follow the instructions here: www.newerteam.com/help/If you don't have a modded Wii use the "I don't want to install anything" option when you get to it and it will provide the "Letterbomb" exploit instructions to run homebrew.

You need an original game disc to load this game though, right?

Yes. Although I saw someone had posted a modified ISO that included the new game stuff ... but it is certainly simplest just to have the original. Further: why wouldn't you have the original? It's great!

I'm with you, my Wii is still in use as homebrew and Wii/GC central. It's nice having a stable place for all my Wii and GC games and I have no desire to start messing with my Wii U until I absolutely have to (e.g. my Wii dies).

Yeah, but eventually I would like to get one to use for homebrew somewhere down the line. With the gamepad the Wii U could become the ultimate homebrew machine.

Yeah, but eventually I would like to get one to use for homebrew somewhere down the line. With the gamepad the Wii U could become the ultimate homebrew machine. It's only taken a year and a half, but thanks to a just-released exploit for the Wii U: www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1215749I've done this myself and (after buying Brain Age for Wii U) was able to successfully 'inject' Phantom Hourglass and play it in Wii U Virtual Console mode! This is something I've been waiting for FOREVER as my Zelda marathon with my brother and daughter has been stalled waiting for Phantom Hourglass / Spirit Tracks to be released on the Virtual Console (only in Europe WHY?) I also 'ripped' Mario Kart 8 to have a backup, but forgot to disable the 1-hour timeout shutdown so it didn't get the whole game (it's SLOW over the network). This new development should be VERY interesting as there are ongoing discussions about getting N64 and GBA games working in addition to DS using the same 'injection' system over an existing valid game. It's also apparently possible to easily customize the DS screen appearance on the Wii U ... I'll be trying that shortly to get side-by-side screens on Phantom Hourglass (top / bottom is too small on a widescreen TV). Best of all, this is solely a 'softmod' - only a website and video player exploit is used so other than copying files to an SD card nothing in the Wii U itself is compromised.

Huh? 1st I was going to comment on bringing up an old HB thread. Now my curiosity is piqued.
What does this mod allow you to do? If you are allowed to rip your Wii U games onto an external HDD, I'm listening...

Right now the primary use is playing any DS game in virtual console mode on the Wii U. You can also rip your digital titles and disc-based games to a networked computer and play the backup copy. You can NOT currently play them from a external hard drive, but you CAN play them from an SD card. I personally haven't tried doing that yet but I will soon. Playing the backup off the SD card will also disable any online components (e.g. Mario Maker, Mario Kart, etc.)
But given that this exploit is in its infancy I wouldn't be surprised to see things change quickly.

Interesting. I'll keep an eye out, HDD is my main interest. I wouldn't want to burn my SD cards for this, those games can get BIG.

So, as usual I am late to the party. Given my retro gaming itch lately, I picked up an old Wii off of Craig's List that is backward compatible with Gamecube (why or why did I sell off my Wii and Gamecube?) Anyway, jincman and I basically soft modded our respective Wii's with Nintendont. So far it's just used to play Gamecube games off of an HDD. I snagged a 1TB HDD and loaded it up with a bunch of my old favorite games. Love this thing now. Eventually I'd like to get Wii games running off the HDD as well along with cover flow, but this is a great first step.

Yeah, HA indeed. I actually picked up a second Wii with GC ports several years ago just to make sure I'd always have the capability of running the backup loader. At this point my main Wii / GameCube machine is actually my Wii U (in Wii mode), believe it or not. It runs all the backups (USB Loader, Nintendont, etc.) exactly as it did on the Wii but I don't have to switch machines. (It uses the Smash Bros GC adapter for GC controllers, but you can use any other controllers as well.) The only issue with using the Wii U is that the hard drive has to be 'hidden' from the regular Wii U mode so it doesn't attempt to format it every time. I didn't find it too difficult, but I also haven't run out of system memory yet; if so then having 2 hard drives might be more problematic.
