All this talk about Legos had me feeling nostalgic for some of old Star Wars ones I kept way back when they came out. When they first came out, I had all of them, but unfortunately decided to sell them off as my mom worked for someone who had a boy who loved Star Wars and she really wanted to give them to him, so I told her she could have them. I did keep the original X wing though and the Boba Fett ship, Slave 1. I fished them both out of the basement this weekend and built them both. Good stuff. Now I'm making hints to my wife that I wouldn't mind having some others, so maybe I'll get one for Father's Day or something.
Of course my daughter sees these assembled toys and wants to play with them, but I don't see that ending well, so I'm off to the lego store today to get her a couple of things she can play with.

My son loves LEGOs, and even more than the blocks he loves the LEGO mini figures. My wife will go out shopping with him sometimes and he will get the mini two packs where you don't know which ones are inside. He's trying to get the Statue of Liberty one.
He also got two of the Mario Kart Knex (which I guess aren't technically LEGOs) for Christmas and now plays mainly with the figures while the blocks are now mixed in with all the other LEGOs. I'm thinking about trying to pick some of these up for myself with the TRU sale.

If your a LEGO family, make sure to look online for any LEGO conventions nearby. We have a local one next month that called Bricks by the Bay. THOUSANDS of people show up. Last year I was floored by the custom Gundam factory wear Gundam robots were making more Gundam robots. Talk about meta. www.flickr.com/photos/9872286@N03/sets/72157626368201342/I copied the Mario 2D frame for my kid. I had lots of loose LEGO and bought spare pieces on Bricklink. Some VERY cool resources. www.brothers-brick.com/www.chrismcveigh.com/cm/lego_ornaments.htmlwww.bricklink.com/We have amassed a large amount of Star Wars, Ninjago, Spongebob, City, Pirates, Bioncles, etc. I tend to use the TRU sales since that's the only time you see them on sale. Sometimes on Amazon, hence why I watch the Dealzmodos on Gizmodo. At least once a week, there's some type of LEGO deal. A big suggestion I'd make is to buy used. Star Wars tends to keep their value, assuming you don't lose the pieces. I buy mostly on ebay. I also buy bulk on ebay so now I have about 10+ pounds of loose LEGO that we use to make anything. I also use that stash to replenish lost pieces in full sets. Yeah, I'm anal w/ my Lego. I'll post my lastest set as soon as I finish up the Flickr album. I'm a VW nut and bought VW camper van w/ over 1000 pcs. We started in Nov last year and just finished over the weekend. We also have a Wedo. My 1st grader loves it and he can do the visual programming on his own. I spoke to the marketing guy at the Maker Faire and I asked him if this was the gateway drug to NXT, he agreed. BTW, if anyone's interested, I will be selling this soon. It's hard to get and I'm considering jumping the family to NXT... www.legoeducation.us/eng/product/lego_education_wedo_robotics_construction_set/2096Yes, I love LEGO and always have and always will.

BTW, dschroll mentioned digging in the 'basement'. I pulled out my old Tamiya F1 R/C and I'm finally finishing it after 15+ years... I just have to repurpose my 4 ch 2.4 GHz radio which I hope works on it. Would rather not have to buy an AM 2 ch.

Thank you for the lego links. I've seen the ornament ones before, but not the others. I think I'm gonna definitely use the pick a brick stuff to build those lego ornaments (or at least the star wars ones). Are there instructions on that brothers brick site that tell you how to build some of the other stuff they have there and which bricks you need?

Some of the builds do have instructions, you just have to find those. If you're on the LEGO.com site, there's also a monthly build. For my kids, I've also got LEGO and Playmobil advent calendars. Last year, I bought the Star Wars one, that is a cool one. I disassemble them and we use it every year.

Is the star wars lego advent calendar really all that good? It looks like most of those items can be put together in 3-4 snaps. Right now they're selling on ebay for $30-35, so I was just curious if you thought it was worth it. I know you get like 25 items to put together, but they seem so simple I'd almost rather just apply money spent on that towards something I'd enjoy putting together more...my daughter isn't really into Star Wars at this point.

We love the calendar. Yes, they are made of standard pieces that you can find but they put them together to make movie-like vehicles/characters.

I will echo the 'nice VW bus' comment. Very cool.
Made me head to TRU today to see what they had in terms of LEGOs. So much more stuff than I had anticipated. I'm glad I'm not big into Star Wars or I would definitely be buying so many of those LEGO sets, and they are not inexpensive either. Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, most of what I saw was brand specific instead of a normal LEGO set. And then there was the Megablocks that had HALO and Transformers, too.
So my next question is do you guys display these? And how? I'm a big Generation 1 Transformers fan (I had SO many of the different toys when I was a kid) and I started collecting the different mini heroes and I wonder if you just keep your things in storage or actually display them. I'm eventually wanting to figure out a way to display my 'toys' in a cool way. Yeah, I'm goofy but I love it. Can't wait for my Metroid figure!!

Fatty, I too love Gen 1 Transformers. I always loved the various combiners (Constructicons, Airiel Bots, Combaticons, etc.). Not to mention I loved the Dino bots too. Oh, what the hell..I loved them all. I've only got a couple of Lego things right now (although I want more), but I don't display them. I pretty much put them together, have fun for a bit, then take them apart and store them away until I get the calling again. I live in a small space, so there's just not a lot of places for me to display stuff. I should install some shelves on the wall and maybe try and rectify that, but just haven't gotten around to that yet. Plus, these legos are HUGE, so even a shelf isn't really ideal. I do have some Batman Maquette statues though (many which are autographed), and I do display those. I picked up a glass display case from IKEA for cheap: www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10119206/It fits all my statues perfectly. Right now its in my bedroom only to keep it out of reach from my daughter, however, someday I hope to move it back to our living room.

Nope on the display, takes too much space. I look at our LEGOs like puzzles that can be played w/ over and over again. After we build, I leave them out for a bit until the kids ignore them. Then I disassemble for the next time when we feel like building again. Some sets get built over and over (Star Wars, vehicles, the VERY VERY VERY cool X Games working snowboarder sets) while some (CITY), don't get built much. The good thing is that if you keep your sets in good condition, the resale is still pretty high. Just don't dump then into bins and mix 'em all up.
I used to be into transformers. My fav was one that I got from Asia. It was one of the Decepticons that turned into a working laser gun. I was also into building Gundam models. I had to find them in Asian toy stores or ask friends visiting Hong Kong to get them for me. My biggest problem was that I was (and still am) a HORRIBLE painter so I tried to get ones w/ simple paint schemes.

I got her one of those blind packs where you don't know what you get until you open it. She got the butcher one and loves it. She saw the little included picture of all the various mini figures in this series and wants a few others from there. Of course, we won't know what we get until after we buy it. I might get her another one for a special occasion. I'll let you know if we manage to get the statue of liberty. Do you have any duplicate mini figures you're looking to part with? My daughter wants a few from the latest series, so I'd be willing to buy some off of you if you have some of the ones she wants. Let me know if you're interested.

Glad to see there are other Lego nerds here.
I took advantage of the TRU sale last weekend and bought the London Bridge set and the Robie House set.
The London Bridge set is by far the largest set i've ever built at over 4000 pieces. I've only managed to build half of one tower in a week. Might take me to summer to build this one. :-)

I'll let you know dschroll. I think we get the same packs as you, where you don't know what you're getting. With my boy, I'm wondering if he doesn't mix and match the different body parts up though. It gets me, because he just keeps it all it a tub mixed together, all of the different lego sets as well. I want to say something but I don't, I just bite my tongue.
