So if we have the pre-order cartridge, we also get the download? Or are they considered different products?

Different products. You either buy the cart and use that or you can do the digital DL. They're both the same price I believe, so the cart wins for me IMO.

One difference between the two purchase models is the doubling of Club Nintendo points for purchase through eShop.
50 points for store version 100 points for online version
Not a huge deal.

Given I have a surplus of Nintendo points and nothing that really is all that interesting to spend them on, I'll gladly take owning the cartridge. Now, if either improved the incentives on club NIntendo or offered gamers other incentives to buying the digital versions, then I might be swayed.

Yeah, that's stupid. Give people a reason to go digital by offering it a lower price. Shit, they make more money with no production costs. This just adds to the cluelessness that companies have regarding digital distribution.
Plus on the green side, there's no waste. I would much rather pay and download all my games.

I agree with all of that. I think this is the first time that a major AAA game on a console has been delivered same day both online and retail. It will be interesting to see how this goes for Nintendo. Of course Steam has been doing this all along for PC/Macs.

This just adds to the cluelessness that companies have regarding digital distribution. Plus on the green side, there's no waste. I would much rather pay and download all my games. I don't think its cluelessness as to why they're doing this. They have to walk a fine line and not upset their retail partners. If NSMB2 for 3DS comes out at $30 for digital only and $40 for cartridge, many people may opt for the digital version. That could then affect retail business, who may then be upset with Nintendo. If they get really upset, they may choose to not promote, or worse, not stock these products. So, Nintendo has to be careful on how they differentiate the digital versus physical copy pricing to try and appease everyone. As far as a "greener" version, I guess that's possibly true. The thing with greener is people need to realize that while reducing the physical goods we produce is good, by owning digital versions now those digital goods need to be housed somewhere. Data centers are popping up more and more and suck up a ton of energy as they are running 24/7. These data centers get their electricity from power companies whose primary source of power generation is coal. So, while I love the idea of going "green" with a great many things, it feels more like 6 of one, half dozen of the other in these cases as we're just transferring who ends up doing the polluting.

Yes ... the retail relationship minefield for this situation could get dicey.
Although ... I think that people would understand that getting the cartridge would allow them to re-sell at some point and online wouldn't.
I think it would probably workout fine if Nintendo released the online version 5 or 10 bucks cheaper.

Boo! One of the few 3DS games I was really looking forward to this holiday (and already pre ordered) was Luigi's Mansion. Nintendo just announced its getting pushed back to 2013

Disappointed I haven't seen any deals come up for the 3DS XL. Costco doesn't have it even listed on their site and the B&M stores I've visited don't sell videogames at all at the moment. I may not be getting this come day 1 afterall and may wait til closer to the holidays.

Same for me, hopefully there are other colors available as well. --- A friend of mine is actually a part of one of Nintendo's selected families that they product test with. They actually gave him a Wii a couple of days before it was released through retail. Since then his family has received a replacement Wii (the first one broke) and a couple of 3DSs. They are flying him and his wife out to Denver this week (putting them in a nice hotel) so they can get some hands on time with the Wii U. Thing is that he is not even that big of a Nintendo fan, mainly plays typical multiplayer 360 games like Forza and COD with his friends. Will play Mario a bit but doesn't care for Zelda much. How could you not care for Zelda!?! I'm wondering if he will get some free 3DS XLs out of the trip as well. Why couldn't you have picked me, Reggie?!?! I would have given you some great feedback, and tell you how you better get your butt in gear when it comes to online (like it would have mattered, anyway).
