I think if the ps4k was just outputting in 4K and a 4K br player, then that's fine. But once you start releasing games that only work on it or are severely scaled down for a normal ps4, I think it's a big mistake as you start segregating your audience.

Yeah, I hear that sentiment a lot on the boards. Personally, I don't see it that way. Just because the game looks better on another machine doesn't mean it's scaled down for yours. Do you feel like every console game you play is scaled down if it also is released for PC? It probably looks better on PC. So, did you get a bum deal? You're probably excited about Uncharted 4. If some other PS4 was out there and it looked better on that, would you feel like you got a bum deal for buying the game you've been looking forward to for a couple years?
I guess maybe we'd start feeling that way in the near future if all the games were advertised and demoed on a PS4K and every time we booted it up, it looked poor on our PS4s.
In any case, I don't really care about all that. I'm excited for more buying options in gaming. And I think the last console gen was too long. I think this could make VR work better on consoles. And I like the simplicity of this versus a PC architecture. It's more like an apple environment. Games are designed to a few spec'd systems rather than an infinite number of possible combinations. You pick up a game box and it says it works on PS4 and PS4k on the back. Not some list of 8 PC specs that you have to compare your random cards to.
We'll see what happens. It's turning into a crazy new world in gaming and I think I needed it. I am feel pretty dang burned out on the old formula that's been in play all my life. VR and gaming as a service have the possibility to really shake things up finally!

I guess possibly to your point a game might be developed for PS4K. And then maybe they will create a poor attempt at porting it to the PS4. So in that case I could see this being problematic for PS four owners. Well we'll see what happens. It could be good or bad I guess.

I guess possibly to your point a game might be developed for PS4K. And then maybe they will create a poor attempt at porting it to the PS4. So in that case I could see this being problematic for PS four owners. Well we'll see what happens. It could be good or bad I guess. This is what I am mostly concerned about. If all I am missing out on is 4k output, then that's fine. But if developers are using the PS4K as their primary development platform and then have to scale down for the PS4, so that there might be frame rate drops or other significant performance issues, then it becomes very upsetting. I mean, the PS4 has only been out for 2.5 years and now there might be a new version of it that developers will shift to and no longer focus on the current version. I don't think that's fair to all the current PS4 owners out there. PS4 is one of the few things that is keeping Sony afloat right now. Gamers, like myself, buy one because we figure we're going to get at least 5 years out of it and get to enjoy great games. I know games will keep coming out for PS4. I just want the PS4 to remain the lead development platform for games going forward. Heck, I just pre ordered a PS VR bundle because I thought this would be a solid, but "cheap" way to enjoy VR, and now it seems like the VR might not be so good unless I upgrade to the PS4k. I'm excited for Uncharted 4. I am excited to play many other upcoming PS4 games. I just want to know that more great games will keep coming post PS4K release. If I start reading reviews about how some game plays and looks great on PS4k, but not so great on PS4, it will be very upsetting, especially if it was a game I was interested in. I can understand why Sony might want to release a 4k version of the PS4. With 4k TVs becoming more prominent in the marketplace, outputting in 4k resolution for games and having 4k blu ray output would definitely help. But, I think that's where the differences between PS4 and PS4k should end.

Who knows, 4K could be the next 3D and not in the good way.
I like the 'idea' of 4K but I don't have a 4K screen. I only have 5K on my iMac and I can only see that on YouTube because it's not worth paying the extra for Netflix since I don't watch Netflix on my iMac.
Until 4K displays are owned by a majority of users, I don't think it'll matter yet. Gamers are only a niche. Until broadcast/streaming TV services provide a TON of content, 4K is still a niche itself.

4K holds no interest for me at all. Blu-ray resolution (1080p) is perfectly adequate, and I watch movies on a 114" projection screen. Sure it can always be 'better', but come on, it's all just a cash-grab!

I am not too concerned with 4K res. But if they beef up the GPU to support 4K and oh btw, VR content now runs more solid, then you have my ear.

I'm with everyone else. I don't have a 4k TV and don't plan on getting one anytime soon until more 4k content comes out. Again though, I get why someone with a 4k TV would want a PS4k. I just don't like hearing about that beefed up GPU and VR stuff. I buy consoles so I only have to upgrade every 5 years or so. Not every 2 years like a PC gamer. I don't want the industry to get into the habit of doing these console refreshes mid cycle.
That being said, I cannot imagine too many developers are going to ignore the big PS4 install base in favor of developing for PS4k.

I've had an iPad 2 since it came out in 2011. It still runs games and apps and such. But there are better apps that would run an iPad Air 2 or whatever they have now. I don't care about the old models anymore. Let's burn this place to the ground! Make way for the next world of gaming!! haahahaha It's a brave new world, Dave. Embrace it!

Sorry for being so late to comment, but I'm interested in seeing how this PS4K turns out. Just recently purchasing a PS4 and not getting too much playtime out of it yet (just been really busy) I hope that it is just used to output 4K and not have big difference between the games. Didn't care for it when Nintendo brought out a N3DS and I feel the same here.
I used to love trying to find the biggest, best TV that had great black levels, huge subwoofer and nice audio receiver but I find the older I am getting the less I try to have the highest end stuff. Haven't switched to the other end of the spectrum watching most movies from my phone but it seems like the stuff I still have is good enough. Eventually I'd like to get a 4K TV when they are cheaper and 4K is the norm but for now I'm still rocking my Panasonic plasma, haha.
I am curious to read impressions of VR when dschroll and others take that plunge. That seems like it could be pretty fun.

Good timing, here is a new article about the PS4K. www.giantbomb.com/articles/sources-the-upgraded-playstation-4-is-codenamed-ne/1100-5437/Original PS4 CPU: 8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz GPU: AMD GCN, 18 CUs at 800 MHz Memory: 8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s NEO CPU: 8 Jaguar Cores at 2.1 GHz GPU: Improved AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz Memory: 8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s Sony seems committed to keeping the NEO and the original PS4 player bases connected. As such, there will be no NEO-only games, and Sony will not let developers separate NEO users from original PS4 players while playing on PSN. Likewise, Sony explicitly and repeatedly states that developers cannot offer exclusive gameplay options or special unlockables for NEO players—so don’t expect NEO owners to get a level editor or a special Rocket League car that you won’t have access to on your original PS4. That said, so long as both systems have the same feature, the NEO can run an improved version. A local co-op game that features four players on the base PS4 could offer an eight player co-op mode on the NEO, for instance. But again, don't expect those differences to transfer to online modes.

I am much more pleased now that Sony is taking this stance. I was concerned it was going to be a N3DS deal where you've now segmented your user base with exclusive games. But I appreciate Sony ensuring that there are no exclusive games to PS4K owners.

Firewatch on PS+ sale for $15. Worth it?
I'd rather play on iOS but no updates on when that would ever be available.
