Just did a little searching around. I would recommend the 2.8 Easy Downgrader. Option #4 under the Downgrading sectionHere is the link to the actual downgraderYou can go from 2.00 to 1.50 but the 2.8 Easy Downgrader is supposedly very simple and you don't have to worry about it corrupting your ID keys (there's a way to fix them, but these later downgraders, such as the 2.8 Downgrader are more reliable) The only thing is that you'll have to update your firmware to 2.80 first: www.psp-hacks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=32989And then use the downgrader. No need for Lumines (that's for firmwares above 2.80 and now that I remember my brother had 2.81).

Phew. Upgraded to 2.8, downgraded to 1.5, upgraded to 3.52 M33.
Couple of nits from a newbie: 1) The instructions forget to tell you to copy the files to the \GAME directory once it's on the memory stick. Took me a while to figure that out. 2) I had to search for kxploitpatcher, it wasn't part of any of the "complete" downgraders.
I tried the M33 Update 4. But when I tried to run it, I got an error: This game could not be started. Not sure what's going on there.
At the least, I can now play the UMDs that required a post 2.00 f/w.

I can't give up...
I went into recovery mode and was able to run the update.
Should I go farther than 3.52 M33 Update 4?

That's so good to hear. I completely understand about the instructions being unclear, I had that problem back when I upgraded to 3.03 OE-B. Before going any further I'd recommend you run ChillyWilly's KeyCleaner v1.4 to check (and fix if needed) your ID Storage Keys. This program will check your ID Storage Keys and if any of them have changed from downgrading it will set them back to what they should be. It's pretty simple to use, just make sure to check the readme.pdf (this one is more straightforward and has more information compared to many of the other ones) and if it gives you the option to unpatch Key 5 DO NOT do it. It says why in the PDF. Also, reformat your memory stick since you have new firmware (don't forget to back-up any pictures, mp3s, saves, etc. beforehand) and when first using KeyCleaner v1.4 I would also recommend dumping the keys before you analyze and fix them just so you have a back-up of what you began with. Now it's all downhill from here. You have two main choices where you want to go: 3.71 M33-4 (what I'm currently on): This one has nice compatibility with PSOne games, dumping PSP ISOs is really easy so you can just play them off of a memory stick instead of having to change UMDs every time. Remote Play is possible but requires installing a seperate patch. 3.90 M33-3: With this update you now have the ability to upgrade through Network Update! (implented in 3.80 M33) No longer needing to download and install upgrades manually, just connect to Dark Alex's website via the internet and download and install the update automatically via Network Update. Remote Play is now standard with this update as well, though I've tested it out to make sure it works on my PSP I personally haven't had a need to use it again. The reason why I have been a little hesitant to upgrade was when 3.80 M33 first came out there were a few issues with PSOne games not playing as smoothly as 3.71 M33 due to some deal with certain memory cards. Also, there have been people reportedly saying that FFVII: Crisis Core runs a little choppy off of the memory card. Since then things look like they have been sorted out with the updates and the 'fatsmod' memory card patch. And with PSOne games, you can always play the games in different modes due to a program called Popsloader (ex. 3.71 M33 mode, 3.90 M33 mode, etc.) But I don't want to confuse you anymore than I already have. I haven't needed to use Popsloader since every PSOne I've tried so far runs great under the 3.71 M33-4 that I have installed. So the choice is up to you. If you decide to bump up to 3.90 M33 I'll be making that jump along with you since I've been meaning to look into Popsloader more, I've just been too lazy. Oh and 3.90 M33 also has internet radio built in, but there is a much better homebrew program (PSPRadio) out there anyway. Later on I'll get into how to actually use some of the features from the custom firmware but I figure I have already overwhelmed you enough for now. I'm so glad you're were eventually able to downgrade. I always get nervous with that part.

Thanks for all the details, good stuff.
Yeah, I get really nervous when debug messages pop up. Then again, those debug messages are why I have a job (applications support).
I might go ahead and go w/ 3.90. Never had a PSOne so the requirement there isn't as high.
Thanks for the rec on the key cleaner. I'll give that a try too. Glad I can copy my ISOs too. That might be faster than a torrent...

BTW, I might mention this is why I like the DS homebrew.
Buy a Cyclone or R4. "Find" your ROMs. Play.
I forgot how complex the PSP homebrew was...

Yep, DS Homebrew is a lot simpler. With the later upgraders on the PSP, things have gotten a lot better but that first hurdle to get it down to 1.50 for me was pretty complicated, esp. sorting through the confusing instructions.
I'll post my experience as I upgrade to 3.90 M33, will probably do it later tonight.

Good tool is DSFTP that jincman turned me onto, IIRC. giesler.biz/bjoern/en/sw_dsftp.htmlThen you can just download your files via Wifi and not have to deal w/ swapping out the memory card. Just need an FTP client on your computer (or Mac).

I may try to update tonite, if I'm not playing MK. Just got my Wii Wheel at Target.
Something I'd like to start is a list of useful PSP utilities, now that I have "mostly" updated PSP. I'd like to be able to move my Safari bookmarks to the PSP, possibly transfer files w/o USB (kinda like the DSFTP), etc.
For the DS, my initial list would be DSFTP Moonshell I'd say DSMPlay but I've never been able to get it to work.

Success! 3.90 M33-3! I ended up using links in Stallone's Master Thread (I find myself reading it with Sly's voice in my head) First there is the 3.90 M33-3 Easy Installer. Requirements: A PSP running version 3.52 M33-3 or HIGHER. 78% Battery Charge Kernel Mode set to 3.xx (Very important, hold the R trigger when starting the PSP to enter the Recovery Menu, enter Configuration and make sure the Game Folder Homebrew kernel is set to 3.52) Installation was a breeze. One small thing was when I first ran the installer, as soon as it was finished loading the install file on the PSP it closed itself down instead of prompting me that it was finished and I could continue. Not a big deal, I was just waiting a couple of minutes thinking it would say it was ready to be ran from the PSP. The thing I like about this Easy Installer is that it installs the update as well. I wish the initial downgrading of the PSP was this easy. I was also prompted to hit 'X' to repair some of my ID Storage Keys, so the ChillyWilly Key Cleaner program may not be needed for you if the upgrader also does this. Afterwards came the 1.50 Kernel Add-on V2 for 1.50 Homebrew. Installed just like the 3.90 M33 Easy Installer. I haven't installed the fatmspatch file (loads the fat memory stick driver of 3.71 in 3.80/3.90 to make memory stick reading work better) yet. I want to see how well it runs as is first. I don't use too many homebrew programs but I'll start compiling a post with helpful links to homebrew and tutorials that I've come across. Edit: So my CycloDS arrived in the mail today. Yay! But my MicroSD card ordered from newegg.com on the same day still hasn't come. Doh!

Cool. I may start on this tonight.
I did a few MK races but then my Wifi is acting up. I'm really going to go wired, this wifi isn't very reliable on my Wii.
Yeah, I'd be anxious if my Cyclo came and I didn't have an SD card. Come to think of it, I think I ran to BB just to get a small one to test because buy.com was too slow. At the time, we got our R4's in Shanghai for $25. Then Nintendo cracked down and they got more $$$.

OK, I'm upgraded too.
I never tried the remote play, RSS channels, Eyeconnect, etc. Wow, those are pretty cool. I like the shoutcast support too. I can turn my PS3 on/off too. I don't have any remote play compatible games but that'd be cool to try. It's like VNC.
I was also able to automatically connect to my iTunes library. My Mac is set up to share the library and the PSP found it. I was able to stream immediately. Very cool.
Took me a bit to "remember" where to put my ISOs and DEVHOOK so I could run those. Then after I put it to 1.5 kernel, I was good to go.

More for fatty.
I have a CSO, old/new ISO. My old ISOs play w/ devhook v0.22 when I recover in 1.50 mode. How do I get the CSO and new ISOs to work?
I tried to google but most forums ban this type of discussion.

I'm not really familiar with devhook, but I believe it's no longer needed with the newer custom firmwares we have. I was able to find this from the following link: www.psp-hacks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=125380 "PLAYING VIDEO ISO's To play video iso's, copy iso into ms0:\iso\video\ then, goto vsh menu from xmb by pressing "home" button for 3.52M33 and "select" for 3.71M33. Scroll down to "iso video mount" and mount iso, exit vsh menu and goto game>memstick and run movie...(helps to have umd in)
GAMES/ISO'S: A few reminders for playing iso/cso games: -You must have Custom Firmware or 1.5(using dev-hook) on ur psp -Make sure gamename is less than 20 characters -Iso/cso files go in ISO folder(eg. ms0:\ISO\wipeout.iso ) -U must have a folder called "game" in psp folder (ms0:\psp\game) make one if u must or format memcard with psp to create folder structure... -make sure u have set iso loader/umd mode to sony np9660, -To play ps1 games, take the folder that has the ps1 eboot in it and copy that folder to GAME folder (ms0:\psp\game) (eg. ms0:\psp\game\starcraft\eboot.pbp)(custom firmware only)" I'm pretty sure CSOs are just compressed ISOs, but I've only used ISOs. Currently I have two PSP ISOs, and they are just placed in the ISO folder. CSOs should be the same case. To create the ISOs (if you don't already have them): "III.UMD Ripping [RM33C]
With all M33 firmwares, you can rip UMDs right from the XMB via USB. This is extremely simple. While on the XMB, bring up the vshMenu, and go down to XMB USB Device, press right until it says 'UMD Disc'. Exit. Now, pop in a disc. Anyone. Once it loads, go to USB Connection, and wait for the computer to recognize it. Once it does, the device name of the UMD, not the memory stick, will appear. You will see one Iso file called 'UMD9600' or 'UMD9660.iso'. Drag and drop (or copy and paste) the file to where you need to be. This process takes a long, long time since it's being read from the disc." This is so sweet and slick the way the PSP handles this. I usually rename the file from UMD9660.iso to whatever I'm ripping to keep track of things easier. And then when browsing your Game Menu, it's right there as an option to play just as if a UMD was in there. Nice!! I'll try to post some other helpful links that I've found later tonight. -------------------- By the way, finally installed the ir Shell application along with the update: ir Shell v3.9ir Shell update to play v3.9 on 3.90 M33 firmwaresI figured if I was going to install ir Shell I better do it before I ended up installing the fatmspatch for the memory stick driver (See note 2)I ended up using this write up since it went into detail step by step on what I needed to do: "Ok... I'll try to make explain it better. There are two files which you need to download "pspirshell39public.zip" which is 3.90 IR Shell and "pspirshell39_update.zip" which is the update.
"pspirshell39public.zip" contains IRSHELL Folder + PSP + SEPLUGINS.
"pspirshell39_update.zip" contains IRSHELL as well (within this folder Contains BIN and PATCH <this is what we need to update> )
1. Unzip "pspirshell39public.zip" and store IRSHELL Folder + PSP + SEPLUGINS onto the root of your memory card (ms:0/)
2. Unzip "pspirshell39_update.zip" which contains IRSHELL. Inside the Folder is what we need BIN* and PATCH*.
3. Go to ms:0/IRSHELL/BIN and Copy the BIN* files from "pspirshell39_update.zip" which are "irshell38x.prx" and "irshell38xs.prx" and paste it here. It will ask you to replace, click yes
4. Go to ms:0/IRSHELL/PATCH (it should have Folders 3.5x, 3.10-3.40, 3.60, 3.71, 3.80) Open the PATCH* folder from "pspirshell39_update.zip" which contains 3.90 folder copy and paste it at ms:0/IRSHELL/PATCH
5. (Optional) turn off your PSP, hold R and power up to go into Recovery mode. Go to Plugin, you can enable autoboot the IR Shell by clicking irsautoboot.prx [enable]
6. Launch IR Shell it you didn't autoboot. Go to DIRECTORY VIEW then it should display the root of your memory card (ms:0/). Go to IRSHELL>PATCH>3.90> hit x on btcnfpatch.prx and it will take you to another screen ask you to patch "pspbtjnf.bin" click x and done.
7. (Optional) go to IR Shell Configuration If you want NO UMD Mode, scroll to UMD Mode and change it too SONY NP9660 NOUMD Mode
If you have popsloader installed, scroll to POP Ver change to Use Popsloader Plugin and hit O to save
Test if everything works and good luck" I didn't do the optional steps as I don't care about booting into the application yet. I'll just launch it like I do the other homebrew and ISOs. Still haven't installed that fatmspatch yet and hopefully I won't need to as my PSOnes games have ran fine so far.

Coolio.
What is ir shell for?
I think I need a more current devhook. i have the latest one and I'll try that.
Thanks for the other links. The Recovery description is VERY helpful.
UPDATE: Latest devhook now works. There's a bunch of configs that I changes to get it to work. Honestly, it was pure dumb luck.
