From what I can tell so far ir Shell is an interface program where you can run all of your homebrew, music, etc. from. It makes it possible where you can play your own mp3s while playing your ISOs and other stuff. I've only used it a bit and so far it is alright, a lot of people love it but I'm not seeing it yet.

oldskool, out of curiosity what do you use devhook for? With the new firmwares that we have it is pretty much obsolete. Unless it's for a specific program maybe??

for ISOs, at least I thought you needed it.
I think it may still be on my MS. haven't deleted it. Maybe I'll try to do that and see.

For ISOs you won't need it, I've never had to install it.
Just make sure you set the UMD ISO MODE in the M33 VSH menu to 'Sony NP9660' and place your PSP ISOs in the 'ISO' folder and you should be good to go. All of my PSOne games are in my 'GAME' folder while the snes/genesis/etc. emulators and stuff are in my 'GAME150' folder.
Finally got my microSD card today so I'm playing with the DS flash carts.

Ah, OK that makes sense why my fiddling worked. That's actually what I changed. I'll backup my MS, delete dev hook and retry.
UPDATE: Devhook not required...

Sweet, time to download some skins for my CycloDS.
I've figured out how to transfer my GBA games over to the microSD card but not the 'save' from it yet, though I haven't tinkered around with it too much. Will probably play more with it this weekend.

So you can 'rip' your GBA games on the CycloDS? Now THAT'S cool.

Are there any other good free games for the DS or do people mainly use this for running official DS and GBA games? I am considering buying it but don't want to copy games nor care about ripping my own games onto one cart.

It just depends. A lot of people like playing with the homebrew stuff. I've only tried Moonshell, DSOrganize and Warcraft Tower Defense but none of these really extensively yet. For a list of popular apps, check out this link.Myself, I still have so many games that I need to get to so the convenience of having them with me without having to lug around the actual games was the main draw for me. If it was just for the homebrew stuff I wouldn't have picked up a flash cart.

i'd have to agree.....i havent really gotten into the homebrew stuff too much; its basically just pocket-nostalgia for me. playing Blaster Master and Battletoads and the like. but i have acquired the above-mentioned portal-y port, so we'll see if that changes my tune.

No, I'm still at 3.90 M33-3. Supposedly we should be able to upgrade automatically with the Dark Alex M33 network update but I haven't tried it yet.
I really haven't kept up with the changes (I think Skype being released was one of the biggest things, but my old fat model doesn't support it), so I'm wondering if there is anything significant to make it worth updating. I always get nervous about compatibility with PSOne games becoming worse (I believe that was the case initially with 3.90 but was later fixed, I think) since that is one main reasons I use it for. I'm tempted to update, though.
On a side note, finally updated my Wii with the Zelda hack to get the Wii Homebrew Channel. Pretty cool and very easy to do. I've been also using my flash cart for the DS a lot lately. It's so convienent to have all those game available without having to change carts.
Next on the agenda is playing Cave Story on the PSP. Vado and others have raved about it in the past so I'm looking forward to trying it out.

I mostly want to update the PSP to match my PS3. It looks like some PS Store stuff.

Let me know if you do, I'm curious to see how easy the network update feature is.

Do you know if the Dark Alex update is complete? On Friday, all I saw was the readme file.

Sorry I took so long to check but I can confirm that the update is complete. All I did was connect the PSP to the internet through network update and it automatically downloads the CFW update. It downloads to your memory card and then gives you the option of installing it now or at a later date. I'm still holding off until I see how it works with the new Popsloader for PSOne games. It's crazy to see how easy it is compared to when we were first installing our custom firmware.

Details my man!
So did you use the browser under 3.90 M33? Then you download the update but it doesn't run? Yeah, it's late and I'm confused...
In terms of hackspeak, I'm in the process of hacking my AppleTV. I patched it with Boxee which allows it to run XMBC and Hulu. With Hulu, I could almost get rid of my Comcast... The only negative is I'm waiting for a Boxee invite so I can actually log in.

Ha ha, it's even easier than you think. Since I don't have my PSP with me I'm only going off of memory so I may not have the exact menu titles correct. But on your PSP menu, the system icon should be on the far left. Just go to that and navigate until you see "Network Update" (I believe it should show up when you scroll up all the way). Just hit 'X' and you'll be asked how you want to connect to the internet (it will go directly to Dark Alex's site). Since I was at home I had the option of connecting through my router or PS3 and I just chose my default router connection.
It will download the update to your memory card (provided you confirm you have 1 MB free) and give you the option of installing it now or later through the 'Game' icon. I'm waiting until I download the latest Popsloader* update before I install (so the upgrade to 5.00 M33 option is right there waiting for me under my 'Game' icon) but you would just select to install it right away. That's all there is to it!
*Because I may be confusing the situation just wanted to stress that Popsloader isn't needed for the update. All it does is when you are playing PSOne ISOs is to allow your PSP to psuedo change firmware on the fly in order to get better PSOne gameplay compatibility. I still haven't downloaded any version of Popsloader yet because 3.90 M33 is working perfect for me so far, but every time there's an upgrade I will sometimes read people saying "Game X" PSOne game now runs a little slower under this firmware and Popsloader remedies that.
I'd like to do a lot more of those nice types of hacks where I'm able to download more stuff off the web but my stupid monthly ISP bandwidth cap would be exceeded in just a few days.
