Holy crap, I started reading through the instructions. That is a LOT of steps.
How long do you think it'll take, not including the seed miner?

It's a lot to read but honestly if you've hacked stuff before it doesn't take too terribly long. The instructions are very detailed, but I think that's just to make it idiot-proof. I'd guess about an hour, maybe a little more? I enjoy doing this stuff though, so it's kind of fun for me.
For reference, I was able to use my desktop with a good GPU (old, but top of the line when I bought it in 2013) to brute-force my key in about 10 minutes of processing time.

Thanks for the link on the 3DS cfw. Now that I've got the Vita up and running I need to move on to the Wii. For some reason the one I have will turn on but won't output to the TV screen. I've picked up another system and might try this weekend. After the Wii the 3DS will be next.
Even though I have the Vita hacked, right now the original DS is taking up most of my time. Advance Wars Days of Ruin will soon be part of the Backlog Throwdown thread.

I'm going to start giving it a try anyways. I'll enlist my son and use his gaming PC which has a 1060 card. That 'should' be enough.

UsualNoise, I'm deep in the whole. Found someone on Discord to make my sed, pretty easy/fast. I was about to dump the FW before I realized that the SDHC is only 4GB w/ 600MB free. I figure that's too small to dump so I have to get a 32GB before finishing the last steps.
After that I want to try to dump a few of my games. Do you have any suggested threads to walk me through that? Much thanks.

Assuming you set everything up as described on the 3ds.hacks.guide, you can use godmode9 to dump carts to installable .cia format. You can dump saves using the Checkpoint homebrew app, although I had some issues getting the save usable on the digitally installed game. See: 3ds.hacks.guide/godmode9-usageNote I never had to dump any carts after installing CFW since I had done all mine already via a 2DS on old firmware (9.2) using Gateway's dumping mechanism. But the new CFW way is much easier.

Phew, got it configured. Had a few hiccups using the correct FW (OLD vs NEW) and then installing the CIAs the 1st time. Appears to be working as it is now backing up my 1st 3DS cartridge, which I know will take some time. Can you confirm this process? Thanks for answering my questions. I'd rather have someone I know vs asking on Discord, that place can be a little of the Wild West, granted someone was very helpful creating a SED for me. Kind reminds me of what AVS devolved into. 1) Dump cartridge to CIA. 2) Install CIA as normal. That should 'install' the game on the main screen right? Also, when I rip my cartridge, does it include my save file? If not, is there a procedure to preserve that from the cartridge to the CIA version? 1) I want to backup the save 2) Convert that save so the CIA can use it. From here Checkpoint it seems that I can backup the card's save. But I'm not exactly sure where that file goes so the SD game can use it. UPDATE: All working! Checkpoint does the trick. Backup then restore to SD card version. Now I'm down the rabbit hole of ripping all of my own games. 128GB microSD ordered. Looks like as long as I format FAT32 it'll work. MUCH thanks for all the help.

Looks like you got it figured out. Yeah, it's a little tricky to sort out all the steps and proper utilities to use, but once you're familiar with everything it gets easier. Took me some time to figure out installing my GBA titles and getting those saves to work as well, but eventually I got it to work. It's definitely easier now to do everything with CFW installed.

Everything works for the most part but I did kinda mess it up. During a rip, the battery fell out. Download Play seemed to have disappeared and the HBC icon doesn't work, it asks for a PIN. I also can't seem to find Lumaloader. BUT, I eventually found Download Play and it still goes to HBC. Checkpoint and Godmode still appear to work. So for my purposes, the hack still works, just not perfectly.

My homebrew setup is working great. But when I go to eshop, it requires a system update. Is this safe to do? It wasn't that clear here: 3ds.hacks.guide/faq

If you set up CFW on your system using the 3ds hacks site, then yes. Also gbatemp usually has the go / no-go on system updates within the day they come out. I updated mine already, nothing changed.

Looks like I may have to start investigating hacking the new 3DS. I just picked one up used for $50 and it's in solid shape. Figure it's worth hacking now. I also managed to score a second PS Vita for $65 from the same person. Also in great shape. Will be hacking this one too. My daughter has already called dibs on it

Yup, it's SO worth it to hack the 3DS. Being able to carry all the games on the SD card so much more convenient. I would love to have this on the Switch.

Based on the current scene, I'd say we'll get there sooner or later on the Switch as well, mainly because of the low-level vulnerability in the bootrom. Not sure how long before it's 3DS-level easy to do it, but I think it will happen. (It's already available, actually, but unlike the 3DS it's not safe to go online after hacking it in that way.) Of course, then we'll need a 256 GB card (or larger) for all the cartridge dumps + the eShop releases.

I don't think this affects anything with CFW per se. However, if you were using CFW to illegally download and play games ... then yeah, it might get you banned. Personally I don't pirate games and only play my carts that I've personally ripped and games I've bought legitimately off the eShop. As such I don't believe there's any problem with 11.8 in this regard, although it's still new. I'll post again if there are any other significant issues with the newest update.
However, definitely don't update if you haven't installed CFW already (in case there is a change that prevents said installation).

I modded my 3DS and it was fairly easy to do. However, I installed free shop and just download my cart and eshop games off of that. Seems to be the easiest and quickest way for me to get all of games on the device. I must confess, now that I have a hacked 3DS, it's hard to go back to swapping carts. :-)

Yeah, going cartridge-free is pretty sweet. Regarding the 11.8 update, though, if/when you update it is recommended to NOT download anything off freeshop as it can now be detected by Nintendo's servers. Better method (assuming you own the game) is to use GodMode to simply rip and install directly from the cart.

1) I only have games that I have personally ripped. Not sure those can flag N’s servers. 2) I don’t even know what freeshop is, so maybe I’m OK?
Have not updated...

You should be fine, yes. Everything I've read indicates the only possible ban would result from 1) Updating to 11.8, 2) illegally downloading something from freeshop, 3) at some future point Nintendo bans the user ID associated with said download.
However, before updating to 11.8 be sure to update Luma to the current version - otherwise you'll have a non-booting 3DS until the Luma's firmware file is updated.
